It's not that I don't feel sorry for the credit card happy Salter family's woes. It's sad when anyone loses their job, and hey, we can all be careless with money sometimes (they sound extreme). But the question is, should Bush take a dollar from me and give it to them? I don't think so.

You're assuming that a "tax cut" actually lowers revenues, like a good liberal.

We either get freedom to make our own choices and suffer our own mistakes (or hard luck), OR we get to be taken care of by the government. We don't get it both ways. I am suffering from the down economy too, just not as much as the Salters. Why should the government forcibly take money from me and give it to them? I've been financially more responsible than they have.

How can you have that kind of income, one child, a modest home and no capital? It sounds to me that they were living too large and got their *sses snapped like the auto workers in Detroit, or the farmers in Nebraska.

I never made that much money in my life and will never see bankruptcy or foreclosure. It's called financial planning and weather watching with the economic shifts of the past 20 years.

Congratulations, and I mean that, you're in the minority. There are probably a lot of lurkers looking at this thread who empathize with the Salter's plight right now, but that doesn't change the original point of me posting this article: if the midwest, a solid, Republican, conservative base, is mired in layoffs and a declining economy it will bolt and vote elsewhere.

We share much in common with these folks and, as I said up top, the President and Rove neglects them at their own risk.

I would like them to neglect taxing me.

For the record, my voting record: Nixon, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Reagan, Bush, Bush, Dole, Bush. Yep, I'm a liberal.

Economically...you're a liberal. You say that a "tax cut" is the same as a "revenue cut." It's the Daschle/Pelosi talking point numero uno.

187,000 - 40,000 = 147,000. How do you owe 147,000 when you bought the home for 114,000, with (I presume) some sort of down payment?

Nuh, nuh, nuh, nut! nuh nuh... CHARGE IT!

I went through an extended period of unemployment so I understand first-hand the plight of this family. However, the federal government cannot be responsible for the microeconomics of every American household. The Feds job is to create a macroeconomic climate that stimulates investment, growth, and ultimately jobs.

Good luck to this family.

No, I say a tax cut is not what we need right at this moment. It is a dangerous opening for the opposition to exploit and the key issue in 2004 will be the economy. The President needs to solidly implement a plan that reverses the perception that he doesn't care about the folks like the Salters.

Where will they vote? For the same Union thugs who f*cked them out of the jobs they just lost? For Democrats? It is about GD time people realized that the economy is cyclical and that whomever is in the office of the President is not responsible for their expenditures.

That said, I as out of work, too, but I made sure that I have more than one skill and I will find something else.

The Salters need to suck it up and go to work at Walmart for the time being.

No they won't. Kansas hasn't voted for a Democrat for President in 26 years.

I live in Wichita and this is all the usual hype from the left whenever Boeing or Cessna workers get downsized. It's a pile of croc!
The aircraft workers are union and they whine like banshees no matter what. The industry has scaled back and these people over extended theirselves to begin with in an industry that everyone here knows is not secure.
Anyone that gets a high paying job at Boeing and then runs out and lays down a 30 year mortgage is an idiot, and we all know it here.

This is nothing more than lefty fear politics again.
Don't believe the crapola about how terrible things are here in Wichita. The NY Slimes is counting on the average person being clueless about what is really happening here.

Reread the article, most of the businesses offering $6.50/hr are not hiring these highly skilled workers because they know that recently laid off workers will leave as soon as they're recalled. That's a tough nut to be in.

(Also, just to prove I'm not all doom and gloom, I'm convinced that the airplane building business will turn around as soon as Boeing retools for 70 and 90 seat regional jets. However, it's going to be a couple of years before this happens).

The President needs to solidly implement a plan that reverses the perception that he doesn't care about the folks like the Salters.

Rather than change "perception," Bush is actually implementing a plan that will improve the economy.

And, whether you like it or not, it starts with tax cuts.

It's not about "caring"; it's about doing what will work.

Get your head out of feminized politics.
