How can you have that kind of income, one child, a modest home and no capital? It sounds to me that they were living too large and got their *sses snapped like the auto workers in Detroit, or the farmers in Nebraska.

I never made that much money in my life and will never see bankruptcy or foreclosure. It's called financial planning and weather watching with the economic shifts of the past 20 years.

Congratulations, and I mean that, you're in the minority. There are probably a lot of lurkers looking at this thread who empathize with the Salter's plight right now, but that doesn't change the original point of me posting this article: if the midwest, a solid, Republican, conservative base, is mired in layoffs and a declining economy it will bolt and vote elsewhere.

We share much in common with these folks and, as I said up top, the President and Rove neglects them at their own risk.

Where will they vote? For the same Union thugs who f*cked them out of the jobs they just lost? For Democrats? It is about GD time people realized that the economy is cyclical and that whomever is in the office of the President is not responsible for their expenditures.

That said, I as out of work, too, but I made sure that I have more than one skill and I will find something else.

The Salters need to suck it up and go to work at Walmart for the time being.

No they won't. Kansas hasn't voted for a Democrat for President in 26 years.

Agree 100%. Similar situation, different industry group here. I think the implication in the article was along the lines of "charity begins at home".

You are obviously under the impression there is anything Bush and Rove & Co. can do for the Salters and others in their position. Even if they could 'do something' (which I think is silly) the Dems are going to block it every way they can. The thing they cannot afford is having the economy come back before 2004.

Let me share a little something with you. My husband and I not only work in the same industry, we work for the same company. That is how we met and in our low 40's we are both approaching 25 years with the company. We make 110K/year and live accordingly. If things go bad, we could be in the same position as the Salters. And let me assure you if this happens, I will not sit around and whine "President Bush needs to do something about this!"
