UPDATE TUESDAY 4/15 NPR scrambles to discover Coalition atrocities.
Here we are 04/15 and the Marines are still trying to avoid getting killed by Fayadeen in Bagdad and PBR is doing one of their audio interviews in a middle-class neighborhood in the city. The moderator expresses her surprise that the immediate vicinity looks like a war zone- describing the ugly canisters of unexploded cluster bombs scattered about the area and how, just a couple of days previously, two civilians were killed when one went off. A citizen complains that US forces had said they'd come today to start clearing out the weapons but so far haven't showed up. Moderator wonders why such non-precision weapons would have been employed in a civilian area. Sound bite from a Marine officer spokesman, taken off-location, explains that Saddam placed anti-aircraft, armored vehicles, and stored weapons and munitions in schools, hospitals and mosques and Fadayeen set up ambush positions throughout civilian areas. Moderator says- "but other citizens here say the only military installation nearby was a training academy and that was rendered useless during a strike back during the Gulf War". Moderator then presents a wrap-up essay that in effect asks why the US would use such a devastating weapon designed to take out massed armor on a civilian neighborhood "where no military targets were present"- apparently completly rejecting out-of-hand the facts presented by the Marine and totally accepting the accuracy of the one citizen she interviewed. I can only assume it took the PBR reporter and her sound crew this long to start alleging Coalition atrocities because they had to wait for the Marines to clear out the Fayadeen randomly firing RPGs, AK 47s and executing Iraqis who were collaborating with US forces around the neighborhood.

First rule with all media - doubt their identification of arms and munitions.

I agree with NPR re the undesirability of cluster bombs turning up in nice people's flower gardens. I mean that sincerely. It's an appalling story.
But why does NPR always manage to find the anti-American angle on everything that happens?!

Oh, I don't know. Could it be the fact that Americans trained to kill possess so much more regard for human life than the average Middle-Easterner that we'll wait until trained & equipped personnel arrive rather than sending the neighborhood kids to do it?

NPR Scrambles to Discover Coalition AtrocitiesThis behavior is simply reflective of the trial lawyer industry--sharks circling, waiting for the inevitable human error.
Send the trial lawyers over there. All of them.
