Bob Roberts is the best film that Robbins ever made IMO. BR is one of the funniest political comedies ever made. In the film Robbins portrays a right-wing Republican candidate for senate and he does it so well that many conservatives ended up loving the character, which I'm sure was unintentional. Sort of like Archy Bunker. Norman Lear created a character we were all supposed to hate, but Carrol O'Connor made him a character we came to admire.
What's really ironic about this situation is that Sen. Bob Roberts would LOVE what Bush did in Iraq. BR was made right before the first Gulf War and in the film candidate Roberts calls for "stopping" Saddam.
I loved the Bob Roberts songs: The Times are changin' Back! And what was the one about drug dealers? "Tie a rope... around the nearest tree... and string 'em up without a trace of sympathy...." LOL!!
