Yes, the author is very "soft".
"This is a time when we might all benefit from a little bit of self-scrutiny. Do we truly embrace the principles of the founding fathers, or are we more inclined to punish those who dare to utter views with which we disagree? Do we believe that we're a stronger society if everyone feels free to speak their minds, or is there an impulse to chill the speech of those with differing views?"
What is wrong with introducing a chill to the back of a person who can't get his mind right? It was the only way my teachers were able to get meproperly attentive at school and in doing homework. After a suitable number of years I find myself a reasonably educated man.
It is only during the last ten years that we have found out how correctly Joseph McCarthy had Communist penetration of our government agencies, including Congress and the White House.
But I have no qualms about entering into an economic boycott of these emoting machines. How could it be wrong if Rosa Parks did it?

Never, NEVER confuse a character, in a film, T.V. show, in live theartre, with who/what the actor/actress is, who is portraying them. Al Bundy ? O'Neil is NOT " Al Bundy " ;learn to differenciate between real life and acting. :-)

Exactly. But liberals are profoundly ignorant of Joe McCarthy, the man they love to despise. Almost none of them know that he was a New Deal Democrat who went Republican only so he could run for somebody's vulnerable seat. Practically everybody he accused of being communist or a comsymp was just that. Too bad about his drinking. He was too Irish for his own good.

Yes, they read the books. So what ? I think that those books stink and are virtually unreadable; however, I'm a CONSERVATIVE ! Which would your prefer...someone who loves the same books you dom but hates this country, or someone who has other reading preferrences, but LOVES this nation and is on the same side you are on ?

Since it was the studios, who had the " BLACK LIST " and today's Hollywood has one, but in reverse, it is the LEFTIES who are actually enforcing a " BLACK LIST ". Doublethink and Doublespeak, is all this whinging is.

I have no idea what you're all worked up about here. At no time did I imply that everyone must like Tolkien. You are perfectly entitled to hate Lord of the Rings and stick to Tom Clancy or whatever it is you enjoy. I think anyone who has read and loves these books will understand my original post--my perplexity that people involved with bringing the story to life are so misguided as to miss many of its central themes.

I don't much care for Clancy either. LOL
I'm just a wee bit tired of the drooling LOTR fanatics here, who are all to ready to condemn and heap calumny upon anyone who doesn't share their fanaticism. Sorry.
I've read that the entire cast read and LOVED the LOTR. That's all I know about it; but, obviously some people get one thing from them, and others get something entirely different. The hippies, of the late '60s adopted the trilogy as their own and claimed that it PROVED that they were better/smarter than everyone else. Obviously, their opinion is not one shared with you. See ?

...a collective sense that it's patriotic to economically damage people for exercising their constitutional rights can put a major dent in the exercise of free speech. Not at all...We're economically damaging hateful, spiteful, hypocritical, spoiled rotten dumbasses who think THEY call the shots in our society. America is run by ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES, not entertainers who can't get past a high school diploma in life.

I can understand the likes of Susan Sarandon, Ed Asner, and Jane Fonda, but Sean Patrick Flannery? Dang, I'll never see "Young Indiana Jones" in the same light again. B-( BTW, I thought Studs Terkel was dead, he's mighty old, but I guess from the list, he's still alive and kicking.
To: goodnesswins
I noticed Kevin Bacon is not on the list even though he has worked with just about everyone on it.
To: goodnesswins
The leftists on your list, and those of like-mind not on it, should never be offered another role in a war movie, or any other movie depicting violence of any kind. They should make only those movies that fits their mindset and ideologies. Nobody would go see them. The Mel Gibson's of the world of entertainement are more believeable and bankable. Can't wait to see his movie "The Passion". From what I've read, he seems to have a winner in the can.

Try www.celiberal.com or www.celiberals.com. They have three lists, one for the "stars" who are being boycotted, another for the ones that are not as grating, but whose thinking is left-of-center. Then the last one is for the good guys, Mel Gibson, Charlton Heston, Faith Hill, and the like. Hope you find the site.

You hear stories that the conservatives in Hollywood are afraid to speak out because they're so outnumbered in the entertainment industry and fear career backlash BY THE INDUSTRY. So obviously, the liberals have been practicing their own brand of McCarthyism for the last 20 years or so. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, they start crying about Freedom of Speech. As John Stossel would say, Give Me A Break!

They called Joe McCarthy, "crazy" Joe. But he wasn't crazy at all. In fact, after the fall of communism and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, KGB records proved Joe McCarthy right. The "Ten" were guilty of treason.
Regardless, these leftist/marxist actors and actresses are hypocrits. The first thing they do is call for "boycott" when they don't like something. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, so to speak, they don't like it. Tough!

It's BUSINESS.
One question of any dummy that yaps about McCarthyism. Where is GOVERNMENT. I repeat. GOVERNMENT. I'll say it again. GOVERMENT. Where is GOVERNMENT trying to censor this?
That's the difference between then and now. No one is taking away anyone's first amendment here.
