France, Lebanon agree on need for U.N. role in Iraq
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
BEIRUT, Lebanon
The United Nations has a role to play in restoring security in Iraq and in the political, economic and humanitarian development of the country, Lebanese President Emile Lahoud said Sunday.
"It is not logical or acceptable for the role of the United Nations (in Iraq) to be confined to humanitarian aspects because in the coming stage, which will witness the reconstruction of Iraq, it will not be possible to separate between the political and military reality and the humanitarian reality," Lahoud said, according to a statement issued from his office.
Lahoud, who met Sunday with French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin, said the anarchy in Iraq and collapse of state institutions would have "negative repercussions on the future of peace in the Middle East." He also said continued "aggression" would lead to more terrorism.
The statement said the French view coincided with Lebanon's on the U.N. role in Iraq.
De Villepin stressed the need for the United Nations to have a "central role" in postwar Iraq and said his talks with top Lebanese officials centered on Iraq and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
"We must deal with the humanitarian and security issues and then proceed on the road to Iraq's reconstruction in line with the aspirations of the Iraqi people," he told reporters.
"The United Nations alone can give legitimacy to carry out this project," he said
The United Nations could also give "legitimacy" to a new Iraqi leadership, he said.
De Villepin said the US and British troops who invaded Iraq are responsible for maintaining law and order.
De Villepin said France, which opposed the war, welcomed the collapse of Saddam's "dictatorship" and that he hoped his regime's demise would lead to an early lifting of the U.N. sanctions imposed on Iraq following its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
Later, de Villepin arrived in Saudi Arabia on the final leg of a Mideast tour, where he went straight into talks with Saudi counterpart Saud al-Faisal on postwar Iraq.
"We agreed that the Iraqis should be given back control over Iraq through taking security and stability measures as quickly as possible," Prince Saud told reporters.

France and Lebanon AGREE! Oh wow! France and Syria's satellite agree! The pariah of Europe and a terrorist state's rent boy have decided what is best for the Middle East! This is so impressive.
I sometimes wonder what planet this Foreign Minister is from. You are a true son of Vichy, Villepin.

That deck of cards CENTCOM has issued is incomplete. There should be two Joker cards; Chirac and Villipin.

"It is not logical or acceptable for the role of the United Nations (in Iraq) to be confined to humanitarian aspects..."It's perfectly logical and france and their terrorist friends will just have to deal with it. Hopefully when france no longer has oil revenue from Iraq they will no longer be able to afford sending their pro-terrorist ambassadors around the world to show their sympathy to the islamofascist cause.

Chirac, you don't quit do you? First, you get the aid of the pope, then get Germany and Russia, now Lebanon. You're working overtime for all those billions in contracts, huh? Also, to save your billions in oil wells especially the Iraqi largest owned by France--Total Fina Elf--where you and Canada's Chretien have a common interest. Yet, the French humanitarian aid trucks refuse to follow coalition orders. Chirac, you want everything on your terms. Hope Bush and Blair tell you where to get off on your meddling, buttbrain.
