THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT - The Church, Iraq and More
Radiofree West Hartford ^ | April 12, 2003 | J. Grant Swank, Jr.

Sounds like the start of a Christmas carol? Not really. It's the start of good news in the head because of happenings in the past several years or whatever.

First, the future looks bright for Catholics. Consider: the awful stuff is out. Priests, not all of them, molest little boys and teen boys and sometimes grown boys. Remember when Swaggart was hooking up with a hooker from time to time, scouting out the alleys in town? Recall when Jimmy and Tammy were goofing off at PTL Club environs -- one scene being Jimmy having his feet massaged by PTL personnel -- behind closed exec doors, of course? Yes, the Protestants had their day to swallow hard. Recently, the Catholics have had their day, too.

In other words, there's been a lot of bad religion in both Protestantism and Catholicism. But the major Protestant nuthouse has passed, at least for some comfortable time frame. That is, unless one wants to count the so-called Holy Laughter insanity that hit charismatics in particular several years ago. Yet no more of that makes news; and for those of us never in the in circle on that barking and screaming and throwing pillows across sanctuaries, Holy Laughter seems to have gone bye-bye.

Of course, the recent Catholic mess has coughed up reality mega -- on all sorts of levels, not just sexual. The levels have included lies, misuse of offerings, real estate holdings in the billions, hush money, hubris, disregard for breaking the law, disrespect for civil authority, and so forth. I feel so sad for Catholic parishioners who have had to live through all this, just as I felt sad for evangelicals and charismatics who had to endure the Swaggart, Jim and Tammy messups. None of these grassroots trusting loyalists deserved what their hypocritical religious leaders were doing behind closed doors.

Nevertheless, cleaning a house out means that there can be a bright future for moving in new furniture. And that is exactly what I feel about the church. Dumpsters have been filled to overflowing; now's the time to worship God in "spirit and truth." May fresh, holy breezes blow through the sanctuaries.

Second, the future looks bright for freedom-loving citizens. Iraqi Freedom is a grand start. Millions of captives have just been set at liberty. They can breathe, and laugh, and smile, and hug coalition soldiers. They can loot and then settle down to be law-abiding, which they will do after the festivities of robbing government buildings is over. After all, many of you would have taken a filing cabinet or two if you had been in downtown Baghdad. You would have reasoned that it all belonged to you for the dictator took your money to buy his desks plus. So there. (In other words, for the theological liberals, there is surely a situation ethics set-up if I ever saw one.) >>> continued <<<

the future looks bright for Catholics

Not so long as anti-American, anti-war, anti-death-penalty, leftish socialists prevail ... at all levels ... within the Catholic church.

Anti American? Yesterday's TV news had pictures from a Catholic funeral mass conducted for a U.S. Marine killed in Iraq, and the U.S. Flag was missing on the casket.

In it's place was some white flag.

If you are Catholic, you might want to order in advance what flag will be used at your funeral mass.

Most Catholics realize that the flag is not permitted on the casket during the funeral Mass. The Pall, not a white flag as you claimed, is placed on the casket during the Mass. The Pall affirms the Christian belief and the hope in the Paschal Mystery of the deceased. The flag, once properly folded may be placed on top of the casket at one end of the Pall while in the sanctuary. God, Country, Corps. Was the US flag on the casket at the cemetery?

Had this been an Episcopal funeral, there would have been a white pall over the casket, not an American flag. You really oughta check out the funeral customs before leveling charges like this. I don't know the custom for orthodox Lutheran bodies or the Eastern Orthodox, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were similar to the Catholics and Anglicans in this particular detail.

John F. Kennedy had a Catholic/Military funeral.

I'd like to see a picture of Kennedy's casket taken during that funeral mass.

Nonetheless, thank you for alerting all Catholic veterans that their funeral mass expectations will involve a church flag.

Agreed.

Reading a funeral pall as a white surrender flag irritated me enough to click on the wrong link for response.

Your endorsement as to enforced use of a Catholic funeral casket covering at mass -- in place of the burial flag that U.S. vets are entitled to -- makes my point about the Catholic Church being an anti-American, anti-war, anti-death-penalty, leftish, socialist organization.

Thank you.

Some people think God comes before country. Sorry if you're not one of them.
