ESPN is getting into the act

Just when it seemed that there could be no bigger horses asses in sports than America's favorite couple in Augusta, along comes Dale Petroskey.

In case you missed it, the Baseball Hall of Fame president just cancelled a celebration that would have honored the movie "Bull Durham" due to anti-war statements made by two of the movie's stars, Susan Sarandan and Timothy Robbins.

This movie was about going to "the show," not going to Iraq.

You know what this means don't you? That's right. The Cooperstown salute to Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" is postponed indefinitely.

Petroskey, a former PR flack for the Reagan administration, said that while all Americans are guaranteed the right to free speech, this right only applies to Republicans, not to liberal actors such as Sarandon and Robbins. Well, that's not exactly what he said, but it's certainly what he meant. Petroskey went so far as to say that by daring to criticize the government, Sarandon and Robbins "ultimately could put our troops in even more danger."

Way to hyperventilate, Dale. I mean, you've got to be some sort of buffoon to attempt to turn a 15-year-old movie about minor leaguers and baseball groupies into a statement on patriotism.

With Petroskey in charge, I guess Hall of Fame candidates will be judged not only on their batting average and ERA but also on their political affiliations. Pete Rose not only will have to apologize for betting on baseball, he'll have to apologize for voting for Al Gore.

I can just see future Hall of Fame plaques:

Politically Incorrect Cooperstown is a long way from Baghdad and Nuke LaLoosh only terrorizes mascots, but that doesn't mean "Bull Durham" and the war in Iraq can't cross paths. In this week's list, Tim Keown wonders if Pete Rose should just turn Republican.

Lifetime .310 hitter who led AL in batting four times. Hit 476 career home runs, drove in 1,328 runs and stole 326 bases. Two-time MVP, eight-time gold glove winner and 13-time All-Star who strongly favored the elimination of taxes on stock dividends.

Robbins quite effectively and rightly responded to Petroskey by writing: "I had been unaware that baseball was a Republican sport.... (Petroskey) has sullied baseball. He has sullied free speech.''

Initially, I was as appalled as everyone by Petroskey's stance. But then I went back over the DVD special director's cut edition of "Bull Durham,'' I found that Sarandon and Robbins were a tad heavy-handed with their politics ...

Pete never played in the AL that I know of, think a sports guy would know that.

What a complete idiot. Somebody post this loser's e-mail, please.

Mr. and Mrs. Sarandon's right of free speech does not mean that no consequences come from exercising it. In America, if you piss someone off with your free speech, you may suffer financially (unless in a court room). If you don't like the financial suffering, then keep your mouth shut.

Not surprising, consdering ESPN is owned by Disney, the biggest purveyor of evil and trash this side of AOLTIMEWARNERCNN. (Anybody know if "Bull Durham" was a Disney production?) And I'm convinced that there are no bigger geeks than sports geeks like Caple. Some sports geek from Sports Illustrated was on TV ranting against Augusta National the other day, as was Frank Deford. The big media have ruined sports, and now they are leading the movement to politicize sports.

Good for Petroskey. Maybe the glamourized sports "talking heads" will now come back to earth. Funny how "free speech" means some MUST listen to it. We can say, as a matter of our right to free speech, that "we do not deny people from saying anything they want but WE DON'T HAVE TO BE MADE TO LISTEN". Boy, these glamour dollies don't like it when someone messes with their hair.

Everyone has a right to free speech and say whatever they want, no matter how right, wrong, or stupid, but whatever one says, they better live with the fallout and not whine about it. Plus there is no constitutional right to be HEARD, LISTENED TO, OR TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

End - o - rant.

Politicize sports, no doubt about it...they have placed all the multi-culti crap being taught in universities on ESPN, the women's NCAA hoops was on ESPN in prime time. It can't pull ratings to warrant that...

Are they trying to turn boys into women? Or just blur the lines ever so slowly...

And Chris Berman is nauseating.

I have emailed Caple in the past about sports topics and we've actually corresponded a few times... Tonight he's going to get a very different and unfriendly email from me. Just as a refresher;

Reagan administration, said that while all Americans are guaranteed the right to free speech Yeah yeah Reagan, yada yada, you're such a victim Jim. Do you grown men that have to report the outcomes of children's games have a clue what freedom of speech is?

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,...

Now even someone clearly as partisan as Jim can comprehend that this has nothing to do with a Law, even if they are so wrapped up in baseball that they think Commisioner rulings are binding to anyone out of their sandlots. He gleefully makes Robbin's crybaby case (thought there was no crying in baseball?) so the natural question is what to do about it? Someone else in baseball reverse it? Its his call. No we're really going to see some pouting from the children's game reporters, unless we can get a law. Yeah! But wait;

or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

So a law against stopping this ignorant, hatemonger Dale would be the only thing relating to the Constitution being paraded around by Sports Writers across America without the fainted idea what they are talking about. This war has just shown America's most incorrect, and dumbest commentators make fools of themselves. Angels won Jim, not the Mariners, isn't your job talking about sports? Next thing Weathermen around the country will be getting politically Left.

My email isn't going to be this nice.

Why would Cooperstown salute a slime-ball like Moore....he is a poster child for factory line abortion!

Never has so much been made about so little. Having an anniversary celebration for a mediocre movie is a joke. What's next? The 30th anniversary celebration of Ishtar?

You know what's missing from all this...WHY IS THE HALL OF FAME HONORING THIS MOVIE? Do they honor all baseball movies? Don't they have enough material to honor than a movie about a loser, which is basically what Costner's character is. I know, I know, it's the soul of the game. Ridiculous.

I don't think Pete Rose hit 476 home runs either. I doubt he had 200.

And, it's "Sarandon".

This writer is another hypocrite who didn't believe in John Rocker's right to free speech, to Al Campanis' right nor Jimmy the Greek's right to express themselves. They got run out by the liberal press that now defends the offensive Tim and Susan. What a bunch of phonies.

Not true

Robbins is free to speak whatever his mommy (susan sarandon) says he can say. But geuss what, we get to express ourselfs to. As Ann Coulter said in her recent column: freedom of speech was such a great idea until talk radio, the internet and FoxNews! LOL!
