Wal-Mart halts N.Y. toy-gun sales

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Thursday suspended sales of toy guns in its stores throughout the state of New York, only hours after Atty. Gen. Eliot Spitzer sued the world's biggest retailer, accusing it of selling such toys without required safety markings to distinguish them from real weapons.
The toy guns have orange caps on their barrels, as required by federal law, but they don't have nonremovable orange stripes down the barrel's length as New York law requires, Spitzer's lawsuit contends.
Safety experts say the brightly colored markings help police officers distinguish toy guns from real weapons, and that the permanent stripes are important because the plastic barrel caps can fall off or be removed.
"In our continued efforts to be a responsible retailer, we have made the decision to suspend sales of all toy cap guns in New York," the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer said. "This decision is based on the belief by the attorney general that some of the toy cap guns we are selling do not comply with the law."

Why is it that cops in the "red zone" never seem to have trouble telling when a kid has a toy gun?

What's to prevent anyone from painting bright orange stripes down the barrel and around the muzzle of a S&W Mod 29? Does that make a weapon any less lethal? Yet it might make a cop a little less wary!

So they want all toy guns to look like this?

psychosis [sy.KO.sis] (n).
The inability to distinguish between what is real and what is imaginary. Psychosis is a term used to describe a severe mental illness. Psychotics are characterized by a variety of symptoms that most people consider abnormal. These include experiencing delusions, such as the notion that one is being persecuted or conspired against. Psychotics may see things which don't actually exist and hear Voices (i.e. God) when no one is around. They often exhibit compulsive, irrational, ritualized behavior, esp. when such behavior serves no purpose or is even harmful or disruptive to those around them. They show no concern for others but may exhibit total self-centered behavior. Includes sociopathy, schizophrenia.

This is weird. A few weeks ago one of the kids asked for a water pistol. No such thing at Walmart or Target. It can't be found. We haven't tried every toy store in town yet, we figured maybe it's a seasonal item, sold in summer only, but it always used to be a staple of kids' toys, like cap guns. I dunno, maybe they don't have those anymore, either.

looks like you may be forced to buy a toy gun online in your state. I wonder what the penalties are for Toy gun traffiking across state lines?

How is it that people and society in general have prospered and increased their well being for decades yet the politicians and bureaucrats say we must have another 3,000 laws and regulations each year on top of the 100,000+ laws already on the books... That without them people and society face "disaster". People and society have done quite well without next year's 3,000 new federal laws and regulations. Why all of a sudden can people and society not continue to do quite well without them? The fact is, they'd be better off without 99% of them.
So who really benefits from 3,000 new laws and regulations each year? -- not to mention state laws and regulations. Politicians and bureaucrats. They create boogieman problems and with a complicit media towing their boogieman problems cast a net of false fear and unwarranted despair in people.
Quite literally, they create problems where none exist. They're sick in that they chose to frighten people and foist false despair on them and do that to collect their unearned paychecks. Their job security is predicated on deceiving as many people as possible.
Fully integrated honesty is key. That we have the government we have that has gone so far off course from the government the founders created is a product of irrationality and dishonesty. Changing the laws via the "system" is almost completely useless. Politicians create dozens of unconstitutional laws before even considering repealing just one unconstitutional law. That is not a system -- it's a cluster fu*k of deception, irrationality, fraud and abuse.
Voting for the lesser of evils always begets evil. How can so many people thinking they're right be so wrong?
Wake up! Politics is not the solution -- politics is the problem.

Do toy knives have special markings? Toy bats, toy cars? I guess that the NY legislature will next look at requiring Baking soda, talcum powder, and powdered sugar all be colored some pigment so as to limit the number of "false anthrax scare" cases.

Have they ever used this law to prosecute "antique" dealers, people at flea markets, or garage sales?
I'm sure that there are pre-"Orange plastic law" guns in New York.
Looks like there is a loophole in this gun law.
