Well, the same kids also sat on department store Santas' laps, so maybe that caused it. Post hoc, ergo propter hoc, has made lots of lawyers rich beyond Napolean's wildest dreams. Since vaccines are given to a mass of people, they are an easy thing to blame whenever one looks for causes, or casus belli...
Diabetes, type two, is also epidemic among adults. The kids and grownups are eating too many Little Debbies and not enough meat, fish, and cheese. When one cuts out desserts and most breads, and sees one's triglycerides go down, that's hard to argue with.
Butter your broccoli, and lose those pounds.

Ketone-throwing is part of a range of cheap and easy tests given patients in intitial history and physical. Positives can indicate stress, but once the explanation is offered that one is on a low-carb diet, attn goes on to other indicators.
It's an intereting posit--this literal kind of "starvation" may be the natural and normal state of the human creature. Would make a fascinating study, but there's no profit in studying it for anyone. It simply means that your body is burning its fat stores for fuel. It doesn't mean you're walking around hungry. As a matter of fact, I can always tell when I'm throwing ketones because I don't get hungry.
Atkins' most difficult stage is when you reach your target weight. You're supposed to add back carbs very slowly and carefully until you know exactly how many you can consume without bad effects (weight gain is only the most obvious). One bad effect, IMO, is you get your appetite running overtime again with those increased carbs. Having lived so long without a lot of carbs--you start to like the advantages, and are leery and uncomfortable adding carbs, at least for me.

I went on Atkins and immediately started losing weight. Stopped Atkins and immediately started gaining the weight back.
The problem with Atkins for me is finding food without carbs? The LOW FAT craze has replaced protein and fat in EVERYTHING except (some meat) with carbs. I figured out I was eating like 300 carbs grams a day before I went on Atkins.
I don't think it takes a rocket-scientist to realize that Atkins is right and carbs are killing us.

He kept it off for about five years, but has gained it all back and more. He is now about 50 pounds higher than when he started.

Liberals hate Atkins because the only non-carb food is MEAT. To accept that MEAT is good for your would invalidate many of their lives. I think doctors go along with this because if they break rank they will be outed by their coleages and not invited to their doctor-games anymore.

I don't push low-carb on anyone who is not looking to address problems with weight or other things (like that sleepiness that hits about three o'clock, or why one is ravenous at ten o'clock in the morning). Fact is, I used to be able to eat as I pleased, and get a little exercise, and that would control everything. In my forties this stopped working.
I still love to bake, and I need people around who can handle flour and some sugar to enjoy the things I make. But my DH, who is not on low-carb, has lost weight just eating more of the things that I happen to eat, not necessarily less of his usual diet. Atkins is a breeze for men--men can maintain many more carbs than women.
And we're doing the Omega-3 thing, eating losts of fish, to see if that helps. It doesn't look dangerous, so why not?
To: Naspino
I believe you are right about ideology being behind the resistance to the obvious benefits of avoiding sugar. But it's more complex than animal rights--it's a matter of eating "more than your share." Lowcarb is NOT cheap. Flour is much cheaper than meat. Therefore, when you eat meat, you are consuming much more than you "deserve" to consume.
It was a doc that turned me on to lowcarb. Went for my physical, and my pudgy doc had buffed up. Atkins is a doc.
Docs go to the same schools and read the same journals as everyone elese, which is why they are sticking to the food pyramid for the time being. They are conservative and slow to change. And the people who run things like the American Heart Association are your typical tenured types, many of them doctors who'd do anything to escape the hard work of taking care of patients.
Lately there's been some noise about "Syndrome X" which is nothing more than a variation of Atkins. Carbohydrate Addicts is Atkins. But they don't want to give him credit because that would be admitting that they have been wrong for over thirty years.

It's an intereting posit--this literal kind of "starvation" may be the natural and normal state of the human creature. I am firmly convinced it is. Early man did not store food. The only substantial real source of carbs during the winter was roots which have to be cooked. Cooking utensils per se (pots) have not been around that long. Man went into ketosis for months at a time! It is a natural state. That is why it feels good (all but the most extreme levels). Ketosis is a benficial state. It alleviates depression, makes you more alert, reduces hunger, gives you energy etc. All this with the side benefit of burning fat at an accelerated rate.
I have literally been in low level ketosis for months at a time.

He is now about 50 pounds higher than when he started. I have never heard of anyone gaining 50 pounds while on atkin's maintenence. This is new.

We're talking 125 pounds. The original 75 lost, plus 50 more. After several years on Adkins he felt so bad he couldn't keep it up. I might add that he's an M.D.
maintenance is always the hardest part of any diet.

Again, someone who says (Bashing low Carb diets Alert!) is saying "I know next to nothing about nutritional physiology." Man I am glad you are on this thread to bring some sanity back. Sheeesh people here that think man is not supposed to eat like a cow. These people want to eat meat and nutrient dense green vegetables! They don't want to follow the nutrient guidlines set by George McGovern and a bunch of democrats and vegans! What morons!
Again I appreciate your contribution to the thread. It was literally packed with pertinent info.
Thanks

The real question for any diet plan is how it works over a lifetime. What percentage of people maintain their weight over 15 or twenty years, as opposed to people who use no plan at all.

The problem with Atkins for me is finding food without carbs? You ain't kidding. It's especially hard if you work full-time and have a long commute - if you don't feel like cooking at the end of the day, there isn't much "quick" to choose from on Atkins. (I've just started Atkins and I'm still in the "feeling lousy" stage)
When my mother was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, I had the same problem finding low-sodium foods for her. Everything canned or pre-packaged is loaded with salt.
The food industry needs a major kick in the pants. It's up to the consumer to deliver it to them.

FWIW
I started Atkins in Jan, 2002 @ 315#s.
I'm now down to approx 200 and haven't felt this good in 30 years.
Best to all!

I lost 50lbs just cutting down on carbs. Lay off the bread, cookies, pasta, rice, potatos, etc. Which was typically a mainstay.
CUTTING DOWN - not out. Drink a 1-2 liters a water a day. Take your vitamins.
Exercise to increase your burn rate, and you can eat more carbs - drink more beer. Simple.
Blood pressure dropped, HDL, LDL, everything went into the excellent range. Back problems disappeared, as well as old man aches and pains. Everything gets better - EVERYTHING !

The Seattle Times,Nov 6th published an article that convinced me to try low-carb. The article titled,"In brief study,Atkins diet adherents lose more, their average loss is 18.5 pounds". The basis of the article is a study which enrolled 53 women, ages 31 to 59,for six months. Half followed a low fat approach, eating 30% of calories from fat.The other half ate the diet populized by Atkins. Those in the Atkins group shed on average 18.5 pounds, about 10 of it from body fat.(The rest was water and lean muscle)By comparison, the low fat group lost about 9 pounds, about 5 from body fat. This backs up the Veterans Administrtion Low Carbohydrate Study which was presented a year ago.End of article. I would like to add a book by Michael Eades,"The Low Carb Comfort Food Cookbook",I think it has some good recipies, some of the ingredient's you will have to go to a health food store or natural foods type store to purchase. I bought it through buy.com about 2 months ago, and paid a lower price and no shipping. I have lost 10 pounds and my craving for sugar and wheat.

Yes -- if anyone has this problem and a solution PLEASE let me know. How can you stay on Atkins, enjoy meals, and not slave in the kitchen everyday three times a day. I even looked for their "delivery" option but they don't cover my area.
