[history]
In mid-March, the Senate narrowly voted down an amendment that would have opened the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil exploration. Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., voted against the amendment, citing his campaign pledge not to open up ANWR to oil drilling. Better late than never. Norm made this promise while thinking he might collect a few Wellstone voters vs. Junior Soprano Mondale. No need for that now.

The problem with the US becoming oil independant is that the country would lose a great source of "holders of the dollar".
The US will never become oil independant because the government knows that any massive loss of dollar outflow from the US to others will have a devastating effect on our dollar.
