As George Bush prepares to meet Tony Blair tomorrow in Belfast, it is worth remembering what we are fighting for. We are seeking to rid Iraq of chemical weapons, change the regime in Baghdad, and introduce democracy into the Middle East via a newly-liberated citizenry in the heart of the region. Up until now, Britain has been a stalwart military ally, but all of this may change soon.
The UN fiasco of November through March (trying to obtain a second resolution and such) came about because the US felt a need to help out our embattled ally at 10 Downing Street. It failed and should not have been pursued in the first place, as hindsight has illuminated to us. It strengthened our enemies in France (yes, France was neither neutral nor an ally at the UN, therefore was an enemy). It bolstered the confidence of those in the Arab world and elsewhere who sought to diplomatically humiliate our government and render our sovereign foreign policy illegitimate. It also bolstered the will of Saddam Hussein and gave him propaganda to use with his people, arguably causing higher American casualties. We did this for Tony Blair.
I must say that our British allies are performing brilliantly and heroically in Iraq. Theirs are brave soldiers and deserve our total support. But as this war continues, our interests will diverge. Britain and its public see this conflict as a big humanitarian operation. A dictator must be stopped from killing, people must be fed and housed, and the UN must be willing to oversee the re-construction of the country. We see it as a matter of national security - we must secure the country first, find and destroy the weapons of mass destruction, then mold Iraq in our image so that we can re-make the Middle East...

Thanks for posting this. Been saying this for well over a month to mostly deaf ears. I have great hope that President Bush will "JUST SAY NO" to PM Blair's UN involvement!

Attempt to sew division. Not a particularly good one either.

we must secure the country first, find and destroy the weapons of mass destruction, then mold Iraq in our image so that we can re-make the Middle East..." Absolutely NOT! We will not "mold Iraq in our image." There is no other country quite like the United States, and there never will be.
Iraqis will democratically determine the future of Iraq, and, well, we'll see how the rest goes.
George W. Bush is not going to "re-make" the Middle East. He couldn't even if he wanted to.

Mr. Blair owes one to President Bush. He ought to pull back from from insisting on stupid, dangerous policies in order to save his political neck.
He should know by now that the British left will stab him in the back no matter what he does.
Don't go wobbly, Mr. Blair. Stick with President Bush's wisdom and you'll win your next election.

Freedom for 25 million people in the heart of the Middle East! To see a nation of that size reborn will be a miracle of humanity and an undeniable affirmation that the yearning to be free is an inseparable part of every human being.
Their success will only further encourage the liberation of tyrannical regimes everywhere. That is why the UN so desperately wants to be involved, to sabotage our good work and set them up to be groups in competition with each other rather than free citizens in cooperation with each other.
But we have seen terrorists in UN vehicles before and we are done with being taken for suckers for the sake of France. This situation is too delicate for the ham-handed socialism of UN policy. The UN could not even protect the population of Srebrenica; there is nothing in the record to indicate that it could competently fill the vital role of safeguarding the lives and freedom of Iraqis. Failing this role is something our enemies desperately want, and we cannot afford.
Iraqis deserve better than subject them to the tender mercies of the U.N.

Bottom Line:
Apart from the U.S.A.,......Mr. Blair and Britain ARE VERY MUCH INTERNATIONALISTS!!!
(ie. themselves the 'groomers' of the U.N.)

Nah.
Blair, already blustering and bullshitting about what we may and may not do in future and in respect to Iraq's governence, france, germany, russia, china, the un, the eu, nato and Syria and Lybia and Iran etceteras, can go home now.
We are done with him.

It was not a fiasco It was a time filler while we prosecuted the war in Iraq. When we were ready for the climax, we called off our footsie with Kofie and sent the tanks across the line.
It was not a fiasco. W showed the American citizenry the uselessness of the UN.
