During their tour at Fort Bliss, a sprawling military base on the western tip of Texas, Jessica Lynch and Lori Ann Piestewa had little choice but to spend time together.
As logistics and supply specialists, their military duties constantly intertwined. When Private First Class Lynch needed to stock up on toilet paper or shaving kits for deploying troops, she ordered the gear from Private First Class Piestewa, stationed in a nearby warehouse.
When they were not at work -- a rarity in the weeks leading up to the Iraqi war -- the pair shared a tiny room at the 507th Maintenance Company barracks, where they had long ago ditched their green, army-issued bed sheets for something a tad brighter.
Their close relationship, however, extended beyond work and sleep. Since arriving at Fort Bliss in the Fall of 2001, the young women from opposite sides of America had become the best of friends, spending even the rare free time they had in each other's company.
"You never saw one without seeing the other," Sergeant Shirley Atma said yesterday. "They were very outgoing and happy people."

"Yeah,I'm sick of all this military hero crap.Let's hear more about pop singers and sports players getting into fights in bars". I believe that Joe feels that this story is beginning to shows signs of over-exposure. I have to agree.I'm certianly happy that she was rescued, but it seems like once a day we hear of another gift bestowed upon her by someone.Her prognosis is excellent according to the news,and I'm glad to hear it.What about the G.I.'s we read about who step on a mine, losing a leg or two? Have they been given a trip to Hawaii? Promised a scholarship? No, most likely they will spend many lonely nights in a V.A. hospital,followed by painful rehab. This story is getting out of hand,and I'm sure it will stir resentment among many vets who will not be making a full recovery. Through no fault of her own,this media circus is going to cause her some grief.

The point is that Jessica Lynch has been offered a full scholarship to West Virginia University (I also heard that she was offered one to Marshall University as well) in addition to an all-expenses-paid vacation for her and the Lynch familiy to Hawaii upon her arrival home from this ordeal.
Are the same being offerd to the children of PFC Piestewa?

One more suggestion about giving her the medal of honor, or renaming Baghdad International, to Jessica International, I going to gag.....
===============================
I think the Medal of Honor is pushing it. I went to the Military web site which describes all available medals and the requirements for each. I believe a Silver Star is about the highest merited unless there are other facts not yet published. Almost certainly she deserves a Bronze Star.

"Forgive me for my ignorance here...been have a hard time keeping up. What happened to the other woman (think her name was Shoshana Jackson - not sure on spelling) who was shown alive on TV? Is she still a POW or among the dead? Have they found any of the five who were shown on TV?"She doesn't count, she's black after all. < / DRIPPING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT AND SARCASM OFF >

Gotta dusagree here. She is entitled to a Purple Heart, most likely (though she was NOT stabbed, shot, etc.!) and the POW medal. Why a Star at all? No one witnessed any of the media hype and I seriously question that "fired all of her ammo killing numerous Iraqi soldiers"...let's get this into perspective...many, many of our Nam POWs came back after injuries at the hands of captors and received a PH and POW medal...Lynch is no super hero.

To question the offering of presents is one thing. To suggest that our soldier "should have been shot", is quite another - If that's what you really meant. I hope I'm missing something here.

I feel so sorry for you, having to hear this female soldier made a hero. I bet it's like being in Iraq as a prisoner of war and having your legs and arm broke with torture.

though she was NOT stabbed, shot, etc.! Actually I heard on the radio that the military had reversed their statements on that -- i.e., she did have gunshot wounds.

It sure seems that way, doesn't it? I don't understand this.
To: DE50AE; stands2reason
I think stands2reason was being sarcastic, because of so many Freepers' inexplicable resentment of Lynch.
