[history]
WASHINGTON -- Every year, veteran and active-duty members of the 1st Marine Division meet at Camp Pendleton near San Diego for a solemn ceremony. One at a time, Marines past and present are called forward to pin a battle streamer on the division's red and gold banner.
Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Inchon, Chosin, the Tet offensive. From the South Pacific islands during World War II to Korea and Vietnam, the 1st Marine Division has tackled some of the bloodiest missions in the history of American arms. And, as the annual ceremony with the streamers reflects, that history is drilled into Marines from their earliest days.

Thank you for your good intentions, but we're supposed to link to the L.A. Times and Washington Post articles. They sued FR a while back for posting their articles whole.

Nah, no problem. The Mod Squad moved in and fixed it. Don't let this discourage you.

What are the FR login name and password? I dunno, I doubt there are any. The Washington Post is the fun one. They ask your gender and date of birth. They must be amazed how many 150 year olds visit their website. :)

I've seen logins for both papers; next time someone posts them in a thread, I'll save them.

What are the FR login name and password? Try user id: annoying
Password: annoying
This works at the New York Times, and the LA times if you can get directly to the login page. It probably works at other login news sites also

Refuse to register with the LA times. When demographics info is required for registration, I usually register as a 16 yeard old, unemployed female. Hope it helps their advertising demographics. :-)

"I would not wish to fight the United States either militarily, politically, or culturally. For every threat, our history teaches us that Americans offer not just a rejoinder, but the specter of a devastating answer of a magnitude almost inconceivable to those now chanting and threatening in the streets of the Middle East. Do they have any idea of what sort of dangerous people we really are? Do they understand the history of the names of those ships now off their coasts, like the USS Peleliu or Enterprise, or the pedigree of the 82nd or 101st Airborne?"

Do they have any idea of what sort of dangerous people we really are?...They would be well-advised to recall the words of Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto, after receiving the damage assessments fro the attack at Pearl Harbor...
"I fear that all we have done is awaken a sleeping giant, and filled her with a terrible resolve..."
