[history]
Friday, the day after Mark Evnin of South Burlington died in a firefight in Iraq, the platoon commander told a reporter: "Mark did what Marines do. He died fighting for his country."
The reporter, John Koopman of the San Francisco Chronicle, was 15 feet away when Evnin was mortally wounded. In a satellite phone interview Saturday, Koopman said he thought Evnin's wound, though serious, wasn't life-threatening.

Mark Evnin was the son of a family friend and grandson of the Rabbi of VT's largest Jewish congregation. I hope FReepers will keep him and his family in their prayers.

Thanks for posting this.
Governor Jim Douglas (R) has ordered state flags to half mast for three days in honor of the two fallen Vermont servicemen.
In an article in yesterday's local paper, former governor and current presidential candidate Howard Dean (D) was criticized for not having met once with the Vermont National Guard since Sept. 11.

There are probably at least 80 other stories as compelling as this one. Every soldier, sailor, airman, or Marine who dies in that wasteland had dreams that will never come true. And every one of them deserves our highest respect.
They're the folks paying Liberty's bill.

The Green Mountain Boys are still willing to fight for liberty. God Bless them all.

In defense of the God who created us, they will be rewarded for their sacrifice far greater than we can ever imagine. Life does not end at the transition called death, nor do our good desires and dreams come to an end, or go unfulfilled. Such is the mercy of him who gave his only son in the same battle of good over evil. Evnin is at peace. His family and we are left to mourn his loss.

It's so damn sad to see great young men and women have to die. Whenever Fox starts listing their names and pictures to honor their sacrifice, I grieve.
But think of this. It's amazing that this far into a war where we've caused a 100,000 casualties, we can still perform a roll-call of our dead in a couple of minutes. George Patton knew war to be a dirty business, but he knew that striking fast and hard, while generating casualties, also saved even more casualties. Bravo for our generals and staff that have adopted that proud heritige. They truly are on a mission of liberation and of saving life.

As long as all are praying, I went to the Clearwater rally yesterday and Glenn Beck said that George Bush Sr told him that W craves our prayers. He said that his son could "feel" everyone praying for him after 9/11, and what's more, could feel it when those prayers stopped.
Every time you talk to the Lord, please add a word and ask him to give our leaders wisdom and strength.
