Marines kill Al Nida Republican Guard commander running a checkpoint (Had Saddam's phone # on him?)

Have been listening to CBS Radio News, about 1 1/2 hours ago, they had a direct report from a CBS Embedded with the Marines, who said that a Mercedes-Benz failed to stop at a checkpoint, and a .50 cal machine gun ventilated both the Benz and the driver.
Said driver turned out to be the commander of the Al Nida division.
Since then no mention of it for an hour until just now a newsreader on the channel said that the Marines had shot an Iraqi General at a checkpoint who had Saddam's phone number on him.

I have been unable to find the slightest mention of this on CBS website or on any newswires. Very, very odd. Would have put it in breaking if I had a link.
Anyone else listening to a CBS radio news station? The embedded seemed very confident of what happened. Strikes me as odd that someone would be dumb enough to run a checkpoint in a Benz to escape, particularly a RG commander (though, they're the sort of people who WOULD have a Benz.)

My secretary heard it as well. There was also alot more info in the vehicle according to the news flash and my secretary. ( So, John, you're neither nuts nor hallucinating)

Maybe an old joke should be revamped...
Question: What do you call it when the Marines waste a Republican Guard commander in a Mercedes Benz?
Answer: A damn shame. They could shot him in a Pinto!

Pass it on to the telemarketers, Saddam will surrender within the week...

If this is true, why would we (the US) want to make this public knowledge? They may be able to track Saddam using that phone number, but if it is public, then Saddam could take steps to counter that intelligence. Not only that, but this General may have other intel that we could use as long as Saddam doesn't know we have it. I wouldn't broadcast this info either, at least not for a few days to see if we could use that intel.

an Iraqi General at a checkpoint who had Saddam's phone number on him. I can just hear Sadma's next incoming call:
"Hello, Hello," KA-BOOM.

They hosed the CO of the Nida Division when he ran a checkpoint in a Mercedes?
Oh, man, I'm gonna be in mourning... why'd they have to kill the Mercedes?

He won't need that phone number anymore. He can talk to Saddam in person.
