WASHINGTON (CNN) --Iraqi forces have placed dozens of landmines at a mosque in the northern part of the country, an anti-landmines group says.
About 150 anti-personnel landmines had been stored inside the Kadir Karam mosque and placed within the grounds before it was abandoned on March 27, Human Rights Watch said.

Yep CNN reported this, but it won't stop them or the other major media outlets from announcing that the coalition led by the United States accidently blew up a number of Mosques, when they are blown up by Hussein's buds.

Iraq is a heavily mined country after landmines "were used extensively in the 1991 Gulf War by Iraq and by the United States and other coalition forces.I'm not aware of any forces on our side using land mines. What good is this type of weapon during offensive operations? Perhaps they're referring to the antipersonnel artillery shells. (?)

Mines Advisory Group, a British de-mining group, was quoted by Human Rights Watch as saying it had gone into the mosque Wednesday and "dismantled more than 150 mines." Just how do they do this? How do you dismantle a mine? I'm just curious and figured some Freeper would be likely to know.

Wouldn't it be just desserts that when Saddam is located he's sent into each and every minefield to demine these suckers (provided he lives after the first demining)?
To: formercalifornian
Depends on the mechanism--but you do it very carefully.
Best way is by gunfire. There have been some mechanical devices developed which are designed to 'trip' and set off the mines in a minefield to clear a wide path.

I think Saddam SS is going to blow-up the mosque in the center of Baghdad, this is why there AA are NOW located there. This is why they have a BagCam on that site.
They will do it !!! Watch ! I would report that ASAP !!

Iraq is now mining Islamic Mosques An Iraqi who converted to Christianity would be safe, wouldn't he?
To: Coop
Land mines are normally used defensively, as you suggest. I don't know what this is speaking about. The only possibility I can think of was that a defensive line was mined in northern Kuwait while we were building up for our offensive into Iraq in the first Gulf War.
What these moral-equivalence morons don't say is that we map our mines carefully and remove them afterward when they aren't needed any more, unlike the typical behavior of third-world thug states like Iraq.

If they care so little about their own holy places, why shoulds anyone else give a rat's patootie about them?

How do you dismantle a mine?
Throw a member of the Iraqi Regime on it? :-)

Wouldn't that blow up the mosque? Sounds like they did this without blowing up the mosque.

"I think Saddam SS is going to blow-up the mosque in the center of Baghdad, this is why there AA are NOW located there." I remember hearing that we have concrete loaded smart bombs that they will drop on these AA batteries. They will break them without exploding. Kind of like dropping a precision-guided Volkswagon on their AA.
