Now that Apple Computer Inc. has let the cat halfway out of the bag about the next major revision to Mac OS X, sources report that the "Panther" release will reach end users in mid-September.

According to sources familiar with the forthcoming revisions to the Unix-based OS, Apple will freeze development on new features in May and finalize enhancements to the user interface in July.

Apple may use the occasion to roll out a 64-bit capable version of Panther alongside its first public announcement of Mac hardware that will leverage the PowerPC 970, IBM's new 64-bit processor.

I wasn't expecting the 970 until next year, so this is good news.

Somehow, code name "Tigger" just wouldn't have gotten across the intended message, I don't believe.

yawn...

The ALPHA chip, a RISC microprocessor from DEC.

In November 1995, the Alpha was purportedly the fastest non-research chip used in commonly available workstations. It is superpipelined and superscalar. In February 1996 it was clocked at 200 MHz and in March 1998 at 666 MHz.
Multi processor support. Capable of running either 32 or 64 bit apps

11/95 to 6/03, Took some time to catch up.

yawn, yawn...

Says you. IBM has been running the 64 bit PowerPC chip on AS/400's for years (you know, the machine with 99.9999% uptime?) and it will make a great chip for Mac. My little e170 AS/400 blazes through client/server tasks. I'll be first in line to sign on to this new chipset using Panther. Where is the AMD and WIntel challenge?

Hey Apple!

How about a means of installing fonts that doesn't involve a PhD in Computer Science!

Agreed that the Alpha chipset is something else. It is also true that when the open software consortium (consisting of, amongst others, Apple and IBM) went to DEC to see if they couldn't use the Alpha chip in PCs, DEC refused to play. Thus, Apple and IBM were forced to develop the PPC (which took about 2 years).

If DEC hadn't been so greedy in wanting $50,000/chip, they would still be a major player today.

DEC has always been excellent as technologists.  But since the mid to late eighties they've been extremely poor in the marketing arena.

Huh?

I admit I'm only up to 10.1.5, but in that version, you, uh, drag the fonts to the "Fonts" folder in your user directory.

Frankly, that's the only thing I kinda don't like about X (the multiple user bit), but with a 12 year old boy with raging hormones in the house, restriction of computer use is no longer an option, but a necessity.

My next project involves setting up an SQP database for my wifes website, if I can only get to the point of understanding it...

= )

Didn't this stop being a problem somewhere around System 3?

You could also cook on the thing - it used upwards of 100 watts in its latest incarnation. Put that on your laptop! :-)
