The M-14 was adopted in 1957 and the M-16 was adopted in 1964 giving the M-14 the shortest timespan of all the issued weapons. The Krag comes in second,1892-1903.

There can be some dispute over this since it's still in inventory and used by the Navy.

During my 8 years in the Army I never saw a fully auto M-14. The Army considered full auto an "ammo waster" (so do I).

Another vietnam legacy, massed firepower was equated to increased lethality. It's still just takes a single bullet to render a target neutralized.

In basic tng 1969, the m-14s we had were semi-only because the selector had been removed, but could be restored to selective. The DI's were shooting a full auto M-14 one day at the range.

The M14s were origially fullauto. A lot of them had the selector either removed or blocked not due to waste of ammo but because the rifle is barely controllable by a experinced person on full auto. The E2 stock helped some, it is a pistol grip.

Oh, I admit they were in garrison, but I never saw them in the field. They were mostly curiosities. The M14E2 was ment to replace the BAR with 7.62 NATO. As with many "good ideas", it was both less than a BAR and less than M-14 because of muzzle rise. 90% of small arm, full rifle caliber, full auto's are mounted just for that reason.

In '71 I had to qualify on the 14 and the 16. We did all our training with a 16. I fell in love with the 14. The people that complain about how heavy they are just need to work out more. I guess if I had been forced marched 10 miles with full gear and a 14, maybe I would feel different, but I always hated the 16. It always felt like a pop gun to me. Now that I can have whatever I want, I got a M1A from Springfield about 15 years ago. The only .223 I have are Thompson Center Contender and a Ruger Mini14. The M1A is my most prized gun out of about 30. My second would be the Garrand.(It is heavy)

I've fired the M-14, M-16, and many other toys and never once felt that I would need anthing more than a good bolt action.

I suppose it just helps prop up a weak sense of manhood to be able to spray and pray. All that noise and muzzle flash has to be good for something.

Sounds like most of you guys are older than I am. I went through Basic in The USAF in '79 never had a chance to handle a 14 till about 5 years ago. I've had the M1A for about 10 years now, I like to go to the range when the people are out sighting in their scoped deer rifles. About a year ago one guy was sighting in a 7mmMag with a 3-9x scope at 35 yards, he stopped once he was able to get a 3 rnd group about 6". I'm not what I used to be but can keep a 3" group at 100 yrd all day long with open sites with either The M1A or AR15, I get some weird looks from some of them.

I have a friend who was in the Marines in Vietnam when the Marine Corps came around to collect the M14s and replace them with M16s.

This guy was, and is, a crack shot, and a major gun nut, and he hid out on an island for several weeks trying to avoid the confiscation, but they eventually got his M14 - and he's still mad as hell about it, 35 years later.

It's funny, he just recently asked me to look into whether he can get an M14 or M1A from the DCM... I guess I'd better get on it.

However, from the stories he tells about the phenomenal accuracy of the M14 he had - he was able to make head shots at 300 or 400 yards with it - I told him that he must have lucked out and gotten a phenomenally accurate one (it does happen...) and that he'd probably have to get a match gun in order to not be disappointed in the one he gets now. But you can match accurize the standard-issue gun... (the military issues a good manual on how to do it - not something for amateurs, but you can do it...).

(For anyone who thinks he's exaggerating about the accuracy of the weapon, I doubt it... this is a guy who got the Navy Cross for dragging a crew out of a burning helicopter - I don't think he'd exaggerate about his weapon...)
