Officers are expected to be gentlemen.
Short colonels are expected to have--and bloody well USE--brains.
This guy had neither attribute.

True.
This strikes me as a little different than the theft of the Naval Academy mascot.
In that case, the brains were used quite well.

Mascot pranks are an ancient and honorable tradition.
My Dad is spinning in his niche at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetary over the Army actually managing to steal William.

Some of the funniest (and most disgusting) behavior I've seen in the service was at a formal "Dining In". This is a military institution as old as the Army that can put frat pranks to shame. They are actually quite useful in letting the junior officers blow off steam, and building unit esprit de corps. It was at once such event in 1993 or 1994 that a four-star general made the famous toast "to our pot-smoking, fag-loving, draft-dodging president" - and then promptly retired.
What I see the problem here is, this NG LTC was remembering and acting out some of the hijinks from his salad days on active. The "new" Army, after 8 years of Clinton, doesn't have quite the same sense of humor.

I totally agree. Unprofessional? Yes. Stupid? Yes. But this degree of punishment is ridiculous. This same general could have pulled him aside, chewed his @$$, and left it at that. I hate this PC crap in the Army...

ahh, the days of the dining ins. what great fun. the arty guys launching stuff at the tankers. I saw a major in dress mess uniform (very expensive) get creamed with a pie. He was not happy. it was almost a riot. the Brigade commander (a tanker) had no control whatsoever.

Tread-heads and cannon-cockers in the same mess? That could get deadly ;-)
I did 4 years in the Air Force, which has as many military traditions as Wendy's, and then almost 8 years with hospital types. Doctors and nurses make for a really unstable social dynamic - imagine an O-3 physician getting his tush kissed by an O-5 RN.
I understand from former Soviet and East German officers that I've met, that our Dining Ins were pretty tame affairs compared to theirs.

Final action will be taken after the officers have been offered a chance to give a
rebuttal.
I don't know why I think that sentence is so funny. Probably because it is late and got caught in a thunderstorm tonight. Do you think the washington post will ban me because I registered as a male born in 2003 and living in Antartica?
