Last Wednesday, teacher Ron Hubbard told his fifth-graders at Castroville Elementary School about a friend of his who had come out of Compton to win a full scholarship to UC Davis.

The students listened as Hubbard described a studious, sweet-natured, deeply religious young man who worked in the college coffeehouse and sent money home to his family, whose T-shirt business had burned during the April 1992 Los Angeles riots. A young man who, after he'd lost an older brother to a drive-by shooting, took his younger brother into his Davis apartment and set him on a path toward college.

"Perhaps that, coupled with an unsympathetic command structure, was more than he could handle."

Well, he's going to get a bit more than he can handle, now, I would hope. ("unsympathetic command structure"....How dreadful!)

Note that his ex-wife and her family are the ONLY ones to offer an apology and sympathy to the families of the injured and slain. His family and their hangers on are too busy blaming everything and everybody for persecuting their poor, misunderstood, discriminated-against boy.

Her eyes must have been opened at some point . . .

An Islamist by any other name would...

Here's a happy thought from Middle East expert Daniel Pipes:

Islamists constitute a small but significant minority of Muslims, perhaps 10 to 15 per cent of the population. Many of them are peaceable in apearance, but they all must be considered potential killers.

How does 400,000 to 800,000 -- in our country -- potential killers sound?

Pipes article here...

Meet an Islamist -- peaceable in appearance, killer

In March 1996, Akbar asked several professors for permission to take finals early so he could fly to Africa and get married. That marriage ended in divorce in 2001. By then, Akbar had been in the Army for three years.

***

Akbar fell out of touch with his UC Davis friends in the late 1990s. Several Davis landlords described him as a polite, quiet, responsible tenant who had a tough time finding work.

In 1998 -- good economic times -- an athletically inclined and personable (but somewhat shy) mechanical engineering graduate evidently has trouble finding work and ends up enlisting in the armed forces of a nation with whose foreign policy he disagrees. What is wrong with this picture?

The old standby of post-1960s journalism:

"He's a nice fella. Oh, sure, he kills people. But he's a nice fella."

"Considering his religious background, sympathy for the plight of the people in the Middle East ... and generally pacific nature, I can't imagine a worse time and place for Hasan to be than fighting for the Army in Kuwait," McKee said. "Perhaps that, coupled with an unsympathetic command structure, was more than he could handle."

Oh, it just tears your heart out, doesn't it? Yeah, blame it on an "unsympathetic" command structure. These morons can rationalize the absolute worst in human nature. McKee, you couldn't handle being in charge of latrine clean-up, why don't you keep your pie-hole shut.

Always interesting that Akbar is another "perfect person". The father we saw early hadn't seen him in 3 years for cripes sakes. Me smell "I get to write a book" and make a lot of money mentality.

This easygoing soldier eased grenades into the tents of his fellow soldiers, killing and wounding them. And he's going to trial for murder and treason.

What a nice guy. Let's forget and forgive now, without a trial, and put him in charge of ICBM's. What could possibly go wrong?

was a shy, easygoing man

He wasn't shy about rolling the grenade into the tent!

As to easygoing we'll see how easy - going he is to his General Courts Martial sentance of walking the last mile in Leavenworth to see the Hangman.

In a related story, Ted Bundy was found to be "a likable joe" and Ghengis Khan was "nice to his puppy."

“Two officers have died from the explosions; 14 other members of the Army's 101st Airborne Division were wounded.”

This is where the image rehabilitation starts with the collusion of the press quoting friends and family that he “was such a good boy”.

Expect Al Sharpton and the Congressional Black Caucus to weigh in shortly. Calypso Louie, where are you?

HE KILLED TWO OF HIS OWN BROTHERS AT ARMS AND SUPERIOR OFFICERS!

There can be no excuse. There can only be a public firing squad. No plea agreements, no throwing yourself on the mercy of the court, just a very high profile eye for an eye.

Akbar, 31, could face the death penalty if convicted of rolling three grenades into the tents of sleeping U.S. officers and firing a gun at fleeing officers while stationed in Kuwait on March 23.

Hang 'em High

I hope his last words are:  Islam is Peace®

"... had come out of Compton to win a full scholarship to UC Davis...."

"But outside of religion, Akbar was less disciplined. "He would sign up for 16 or 20 units every quarter, then get caught up in these stupid game weekends, and drop most of his classes by the seventh week," Hubbard said."

Anyone see a connection here? 9 years to earn a single degree while on scholarship?

Also, the self-taught high-school calculus story makes me wonder why he did not end up at a better school than the party/ag school at Davis, even within the UC system.

Funny how these little renegade $***heads are always referred to as "nice" or "sweet" kids. Like somehow that is supposed to negate whatever evil he commits.

Friends and family today expressed surprise that former corporal Adolf Hitler sent 6 million Jews to gas chambers in places like Auschwitz.

"He was really a nice man. He liked children and dogs," a former neighbor said....
