**EXPOSE IN JAPAN PRESS ON CHINESE MEDIA/JOURNALISTS COVERING WAR** ("Freepranslated" for FR)

TITLE: “CHINA, THROUGH THEIR MEDIA, TAKES EXTREME INTEREST IN U.S. MILITARY WEAPONS AND STRATEGY”

Translated Text from Japanese Yomiuri Shimbun Daily Report:

[Dateline, Shanghai. By Yomiuri reporter Ito]

The Chinese Communist Party, and the media that it controls, is developing strong interest and information collection activities by it’s journalists sent to Iraq to cover the US war there.

While the Chinese Government has take a policy of urging the USA and Britain to cease their war on Iraq, (a Foreign Ministry spokesman has said), “China takes the utmost interest in the prosecution of the war.”

It is understood from their activities that China has taken extraordinary interest in covering the war through their media, targeting such issues as use by the Americans of new, high tech related war equipment, as well as their strategy. They are also keenly interested in the postwar world order, and they are tying all of these issues centrally into China’s national security.

The most active media outlet on the Chinese side has to be the Chinese Central TV (CCTV) and their reporters. They are reporting not only in detail from the bombing sites in Baghdad, they are also accredited to the press center in Qatar and report in detail from there as well. Since the beginning of the war, CCTV has seen their viewer ship skyrocket to nearly 27 times its normal viewer ship. Additionally, the Chinese Government-run "Xinhua News Agency" as well as the Communist Party newspaper, "Renmin Ribao" (People’s Daily) are burning with curiosity and interest. The have added special, expanded coverage on their websites in Chinese, and they introduce their stories along with photographs of their reporters sent to the region. Based on our research from the new, taking into consideration even local Chinese Communist newspapers, there is a contingent of Chinese reporters numbering considerably over 20.

All Chinese newspapers, TV, etc. are under the direct control of the Communist Party of China. They receive their orders and direction from the Chinese government. Based on the glut of Chinese reporters on this issue, it is clear to see the burning interest in the progress of this war by the Chinese authorities. Underlying this is their extreme concern and apprehension toward the strategies of the “one, lone world’s superpower: the USA” against the backdrop of the Taiwan issue and others.

China also took strong interest in the prosecution of the war on Iraq in 1991 by the Americans. While observing the application of new technologies by the Americans in areas such as stealth bombing, and cruise missile capabilities, the Chinese then, alarmed, moved full speed ahead for modernization to address their concerns. On the other hand, they took a strong public position in the diplomatic arena, calling the USA action “hegemony” and “bullyism”, and they insisted the world handle such issues on a multilateral basis.

In this respect, our analysis is that during this new war on Iraq by the USA, the Chinese strategy is to collect intelligence as much as possible on the modern war capabilities of the United States, an in order to do this, they are sending such a high contingent of Chinese reporters into the US war theater.

The "People’s Daily" said on 25 March 2003, under a piece entitled “Air Power Capabilities of the Americans”, military specialists openly commented that a) compared to the first Gulf War, the US had greatly increased capabilities and prowess in cruise missiles and laser guided smart bombs; b) they had highly increased their high tech capabilities and strengthened significantly their air power. They went on to editorialize in their 26 March 2003 issue that the USA is simply “pushing it’s own political model on the nations of the world as a hegemonist, which is undemocratic”. Those types of articles show both the strong interest China has in reporting about American capabilities, and then moving to criticism of the American policies.

China also curiously has noted that the information war is so vital, that “if during the war, the enemy’s media has the upper hand, this can have a significant effect upon the strength of one’s military troops or one’s own information campaign. It is hard to protect one’s people from such an onslaught from a superior adversary”--("Beijing Youth Report"). They appear to be adopting training in the PR arena and view their reporting as an actual practice for such an eventuality.

Note: All Chinese media, even if it is target for mass audience like "CCTV", or elites like “Guangming Ribao”, or run as a party organ such as “Peoples Daily”, are all run and monitored by the Party Central Committee’s Information Bureau, but some ‘competition’ has been developing between the papers so it also fuels the fervor of reporting among the Chinese journalists."

As a service to Free Republic, and hopefully for the security of the United States, I offer a Japanese-to-English translation (some say a “Freepranslation) performed today on an interesting and important article which appeared in the Japanese press. The original article is linked, and is at:

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/world/news/20030329i112.htm

It appears a Japanese journalist sent to the Iraq war theater, is ‘telling on his Chinese colleagues.” His paper is a mainline Japanese daily.

This should come as no surprise. It will be interesting to see if US national security or political/diplomatic correctness wins out as Chinese reporters and their affiliations’ true intents there in Iraq, Qatar and Kuwait are exposed.

One final observation is that no doubt Chinese authorities are sharing information with our adversary, the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, a charter member of the "Axis of Evil".

Underlining and bold face for emphasis.

Your interpretation is slightly askew.

I doubt that any Japanese journalist would view the Chinese reporters as a "colleague". It is certainly NOT "telling" that Yomiuri Shimbun would publish this type of story. It would be telling if Asahi Shimbun (a NYTimes affiliate) did.

The reality is that this is a communist vs. capitalist fight that is occuring.

It doesn't matter if your Japanese, American, or Iraqi; the division in political philosophy between socialist tyranny and capitalist freedom is clear.

Totally correct. This is the war that we thought had been avoided when the USSR dissolved. It was only postponed. But our President and his team do not understand this yet.

What the heck are you talking about?

Not only does this President and his team "understand this", but they are the ones confronting the issue.

Did I misinterpret your post?

Great. The Chinese reporters in the theater are communist spies. Our own reporters are communist propagandists.

“China takes the utmost interest in the prosecution of the war.”

Thankis so much for this.

China did the same thing during the Afghanistan operation. They even moved sigint resources away from Taiwan to use.

In Iraq now, I am sure they are interested in knowing how well their varous help (eg fiber optic networkis) to Saddam has worked.

You and Dr McCoy are still beating on a horse long dead.

The issues are generational. The lines of division are the old hippies and cold warriors against the new generation interested in shaping the future rather than haggle over issues long out of date.

The same is true in china and will be one day soon in Japan.apan.

Those inscrutible chinese...

BEIJING - For three consecutive days in recent weeks, oil stopped flowing through the pipeline from north-east China to North Korea, temporarily cutting off a vital lifeline for Pyongyang.

The shutdown followed an unusually blunt message from China to its long-time ally in a high-level meeting in Beijing last month, sources said.

Probably had nothing to do with Moreece Strongs visit to both capitols recently. Or vice-versey.

Haggle over issues long out of date? WTF are you talking about? Please note that the ChiComs are at least one generation behind the US in every aspect. They are mired in the past, stuck in a system that is doomed to failure if they don't move to full capitalism. Like all communists, they will lash out before they give up power peacefully.

That is the eventuality that must be confronted by America. The ChiComs intend to defeat us and also rule the world as an empire. They look down upon us as barbarians. The hate of Islam towards us is nothing in comparison to the ChiComs - there isn't a waking moment when they are not actively trying to undermine us or prepare for the big conflict.

The Cold War was nothing. The Chinese war will be Hell. Unless we take them out very soon, along with Russia.

Are there any Chicom media types embedded with the allied forces? I can't believe the DoD would be that stupid but the question needs to be asked.

the Chinese strategy is to collect intelligence as much as possible on the modern war capabilities of the United States

At least now China has to observe from the outside. When the Traitor/Rapist was in power, the Chinese were recipients of practically everything we had that they needed. The only hope is to draw ahead of them through a series of terms by patriotic Presidents and build up enough of a lead that we won't totally lose it when the next Democrat becomes President. Hopefully, someone who loves America can some day even get the Democratic nomination.

I totally disagree that the President and his people do not understand that the Chinese are a major counterforce. The administration was lambasted by the press by considering China a potential adversary.

Why do you think our commie press has taken to defiling Richard Perle in the last 48 hours with stories of his links to the Chinese?

The two items are the purchase of MaCauliffe's Global Crossing assets by Chinese Hutchison Wampoa and Clinton supporter Loral's attempt to calm down the Pentagon over their sale of missile targeting technology to the Chicoms.

By the way, I believe these are hit pieces meant to dimish Perle in our eyes.
