It is especially frightening that there is a war going on, which will inevitably cause dislocations of people, and along with that a vehicle to spread disease. Didn't WWI contribute to the horrible influenza epidemic at that time?

Yes IIRC, the Spanish Flu started in a Texas army base and spread to Europe as the troops were sent there. This is from a documentary that I saw, but it has been a while, the details are blurred now.

Yes, I believe so, and it is my understanding that the ensuing pandemic was what ended the war.
