My American friends living in Hong Kong called last night. The SARS in Hong Kong is much worse than has been reported. China has been fudging on the number of cases. He said that the number of new infections have been DOUBLING DAILY. It's spreading like wildfire. It's more contageous than has been admitted and there is no cure. The schools have all closed and many workplaces are not requiring employees to come in. They expect the Airport to CLOSE .. nobody knows exactly when, and people are scrambling to get out of the country before it does. The hospitals are all full and they plan to begin to quaranteen people in their homes.
He said that walking in Hong Kong is absolutely surreal .. everyone is wearing masks. And another thing .. they are running out of masks. It's really bad.

Does anybody have any documentation that the Chinese med professor was working in a bio weapons lab? Go to www.stevequayle.com. He should have the documentation.

Notes: Cumulative number of cases includes number of deaths. That morbidity rate translates to 10 million deaths for a population the size of the United States.

"I was taught in a gradeschool History class that 'Orientals' were the people from China, Japan, etc. and 'Occidentals' were people not from these areas. Never understood how it was offensive to call Asians 'Orientals'." I dunno. A few years ago I walked into a Bank of America branch. While waiting for a teller, I noticed that the entire staff was 'oriental'. I commented on this to the teller, who became insulted. "We have an asian staff, sir," she said, very angrily. That was the first time I noticed that "oriental" had become a pejorative.

If that turns out to be the case liberals will replace AIDS with SARS as the next politically correct disease to expend government funds upon. If it continues to double its numbers daily, there won't be enough time to spend much in the way of government funds. How many cases do we have reported here in the U.S.?

Unlikely as SARS doesn't target politically protected groups like homosexuals.Because SARS lacks the homosexuals' bullseye for AIDS.

PC-ers also object to "Chinaman," which just happens to be a literal translation of the Chinese word for "Chinaman," "Jonggworen." "Jonggwo" = "China." "ren" = "man".
I don't object to being called an Irishman. I don't think Frenchmen, Welshmen, and Englishmen object either.
I think it's just a way of demonstrating power, to force people to change how they speak for no real good reason.

My post:
It's more contageous than has been admitted Your post: Actually, CDC has been very forthcoming about this. We know exactly how contagious it is.
There was no mention of the CDC when I made that post. I was specifically refering to China. They initially participated in a coverup of this outbreak .. not making accurate reports of the numbers infected, and claiming it was NOT airborn, but only contageous via *droplets*. They certainly never informed people it was contageous through smoking, or that the virus could live 2-3 hours outside the body.
To: larrysav
A disease that kills smokers? Uh oh, better not let the PC people know about that, they might want to encourage the spread of the disease.
To: larrysav
One of the Hong Kong victims caught the disease from eating a meal in a restaurant with his brother. I wonder if they smoked together.
To: aristeides
Smoking is PROFUSE in Hong Kong. One of the first things you notice about the people, when you go to Hong Kong, is that they have a cell phone on their ear and a cigarette in their mouth.
To: goldstategop
I Disagree. Anyone can catch SARS.

Yes IIRC, the Spanish Flu started in a Texas army base and spread to Europe as the troops were sent there. This is from a documentary that I saw, but it has been a while, the details are blurred now.

'Oriental' refers more to a style or descriptive thing, while 'Asian' is for people. (at least that is how my girlfriend says it is used now)

"Didn't WWI contribute to the horrible influenza epidemic at that time?" Yes, I believe so, and it is my understanding that the ensuing pandemic was what ended the war.

"my idiot Teddy Kennedy liberal extremist boss (who is agast at the thought of even 1 casualty in the Iraqi war) said there are too many people in Hong Kong anyway!" Isn't it amazing how the same people that are horrified at the thought of war casualities can accept unflinchingly the deaths of hundreds of thousands by disease (as long as it isn't a behaviorally self-inflicted disease) or the deliberate slaughter of unborn infants?
