I can't believe all the cities banning the flag and yellow ribbons. Our public school teachers are wearing not only red, white, and blue, but also yellow ribbons and have displayed pictures of the students' relatives who are serving our country.

Make that "High density urban areas" and I'll go along with you. Your assertion most certainly does not fit central California and rural Vermont or New Hampshire or even upstate New York.

"They seem too, well, Carteresque, reminding me of Amercia's helplessness during the Iran hostage crisis."

Ha! When I first saw the title I thought it was true patriots who were keeping the yellow ribbons down, as if to say, "We know you're over there to do the job, and it's not quite time to come home yet. We will wait patiently while supporting you with our hopes and prayers." It's too early for yellow ribbons, IMO. In fact, this kind of symbolism-lite is lost on me.

I've never understood all the hoopla over the Mayflower. Some of mine came over with John Smith and others were there to greet him. Of course then there's grandpappy Adam and Granny Eve.

"The Mayflower," you say? Pardon me, Madam, for I was too blind to notice your title. That said, it is hard to understand how it is that you live and breathe today when Islamic terrorists killed your family so many years ago? That's gotta hurt even today.

You should take a lesson from your ancestors who had the guts to at least try to leave their untenable situation under dangerous conditions. There are jobs everywhere, and especially in the Eastern US, so if you hate California so much, then leave it rather than bitch about it.

Hey, today's Greyhound buses, unlike the sailing ships of yore, still are relatively safe. And you undoubtedly will feel much better when you finaly are enscounced in your ancestral home, which now awaits you in yet another sucky state.

You then will be ably represented by Hillery and other socialists -- whose ancestors probably "came over on the Mayflower" as well. Rock on......

I agree with you more -- in the balance between decent honoring one's forebearers and respecting every man and woman each for themselves, on their individual earned merits and potentials.

I have always despised that damned "tie a yellow ribbon" song. For me it stands for much that went wrong in America under Carter - as well as being a simplistic piece of saccharine ear-garbage.

I despise the whole "ribbon" thing anyway. No matter how much conservatives try to hijack it for nobler purposes, it is still overwhelmingly a leftist method of worshipping Leftist Sacred Cows.

If, for whatever reason, you feel utterly compelled to do a ribbon thing, tie red, white&blue ribbons instead.

LAY OFF Mayflower Madam!!! One of the reasons we had a an awesome turnout at Support Our Troops Rally in VEntura last weekend was due to her valiant efforts. I had the pleasure of meeting her and I was so pleased! She went out on her own time, like many of us, and spent her own money, to get the rally off to a good start. She was responsible for bringing many people there! How dare you criticize her!

YES and... Thousand Oaks/Westlake/Camarillo/Simi/Oak Park still lean conservative. We have Elton Gallegly and Tony Strickland who both tend to win by wide margins. Don't lump all of us Californians together. By the way, Ventura COunty has two military bases with heros serving right now.

Come on people. If they want to put them up on their property so be it. I assume this is other peoples property. You want a bunch of aids ribbons put there also?

In T.O. there are extensive greenbelts, parkways and medians that are commons; my guess is that this is what is at hand here - probably a parkway.

I'm sure the city is within their legal rights, but it will likely upset some people to get nationwide publicity.

When I lived in California we referred to the town as "Thousand Jokes"

The area was named for its native scrub oak trees which survive in dry conditions; however, after the city came into being new developments were required to set aside a certain number of trees to be left in place when building. In California sprinklers are everywhere and it didn't take long for these oak trees to develop root rot and die.

Funny thing about good intentions.

Ask your childish, impertinent question again after you two airhead soccer moms voluntarily waddle yourselves onto a warship or aircraft deploying for parts unknown and for an indeterminant period of time during a war.

Nice going on the rally, though......

Received E-Mail from TO ---read as follows Thank you for your email to the City of Thousand Oaks. Your opinions are valued and respected. Below is a Press Release that was sent out this afternoon. We hope this will answer your quesitons. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 28, 2003 CONTACT: Jim Friedl, Deputy City Manager, 805/449-2121 CITY OF THOUSAND OAKS SUPPORTS UNITED STATES TROOPS These are just some of the ways the City of Thousand Oaks has been demonstrating support for the United States of America and for the troops deployed in harms way throughout the world. 1. Yellow ribbons are displayed on many employee lapels, in employee offices and on large oak trees outside City Hall. 2. City employees have sent care packages including letters supporting the troops. In exchange the City received a flag flown over combat territory in Afghanistan by Dory Apgar, 1st Lt., 913th Expeditionary Air Refueling Suadron which is displayed in the employee lounge. 3. The City of Thousand Oaks is paying for prepaid postcards (including postage) from the City of Thousand Oaks to be available for City employees to send to U.S. troops. 4. The City of Thousand Oaks is paying the salary differential between military pay and City pay for those employees called up from the reserves (there are currently three). 5. Since soon after September 11, 2001, the City has proudly displayed a large 20’ x 30’ flag on the U.S. 101 Freeway side of City Hall and Civic Arts Plaza. 6. United States of America flag street banners are displayed along Thousand Oaks Boulevard and on streets near public facilities. “All of the employees I work with are extremely supportive of me, my daughter and the U.S. troops serving in harms way.” said Mary Ann Apgar, Accounting Specialist in the City Public Works Department whose daughter is flying missions over Afghanistan. Yesterday, the City of Thousand Oaks removed yellow ribbons tied around trees in the median of Lynn Road in response to calls received from local residents expressing concern the ribbons were not legally placed in the right-of-way. City ordinances prohibit private signs and structures (including ribbons) from being placed in the public right-of-way. “There is a concern with the public safety and liability of people placing signs and materials in the public right of way. The fact that the City removed the ribbons had nothing to do with the message the ribbons convey.” stated Jim Friedl, Deputy City Manager. The ribbons were returned to Brenda Freeman today. After speaking with Ms. Freeman, Mayor Fox apologized for the manner in which the situation unfolded. “I thanked Ms. Freeman for her outstanding patriotism and pride and told Ms. Freeman that we are praying for her son and all troops to return safely,” stated Fox. ### >>> "c.r van horn" 03/28/03 01:27PM >>> POSTED ON Freerepublic.com Click to scroll to commentary. First, ignore "Go Dub Go" - as I've said on other threads, he is a liberal troll, as can be confirmed by a quick review of his posts (Profile...Find in Forum). Second, I contacted Thousand Oaks asking them why they removed the ribbons. What I received was: "Yesterday, the City of Thousand Oaks removed yellow ribbons tied around trees in the median of Lynn Road in response to calls received from local residents expressing concern the ribbons were not legally placed in the right-of-way. City ordinances prohibit private signs and structures (including ribbons) from being placed in the public right-of-way. Here is my response:

I don't find the reasons for removal satisfactory. I don't find the argument of "public safety" convincing. These are unique times. I can't imagine why the city would want to stifle expression of national unity and support for our troops using legalistic pretense as justification. Regards, [My Name]

oh GOOD Tracer isn't a coward. You know what Tracer, after I posted privately to you, I felt sort of bad, but not for me or mayflower, but because you are a mean, spiteful little person who needs to say rude things to people in a forum like this. Our rally was great. Did you go?
