NY Magazine: Top Black General Worthless
March 27, 2003
Brigadier General Vincent Brooks faces some outrageous and stupid questions at his daily Central Command briefings. Some of them deserve to be answered dead on, but because of political correctness and diplomacy and all that, CENTCOM can't always do that. I can, which is why I sometimes answer these questions in a mock briefing. On Thursday, I focused on a question by New York magazine's Michael Wolff.
Wolff said: "I mean no disrespect by this question, but I want to ask about the value proposition of these briefings. We're no longer being briefed by senior-most officers." The press pool applauded the question, which drew a rapier-quick response from Brooks who said, "I've gotten applause already. That's wonderful. I appreciate that."
Can you believe the audacity of complaining that Brigadier General Brooks isn't good enough for the press? If this had been a reporter from a conservative news source, the press would point out the fact that Brooks just happens to be the only African-American general on the scene. Charges of racism would be made, because this question's underlying meaning is clearly that Brooks can't possibly know anything.
This war is not about Michael Wolff's stupid stories in New York magazine. It's about saving lives, including his. This is not a criticism of General Schwarzkopf, but the leader of this Gulf War, General Tommy Franks, isn't going to be out there talking to these people every day. He's busy picking out targets and protecting our soldiers. By the way, Donald Rumsfeld nominated Brooks for appointment to the rank of brigadier general in June 2002. Just another example - like Colin Powell, Clarence Thomas and Condoleezza Rice - of African-Americans advancing more under GOP administrations than Democratic ones.

I saw this press briefing today and as appalled at the statment this a-hole made. If he wanted more information for his stupid magazine, he should have gotten himself embedded with a military unit. Of course with his attitude, he would have become a victim of friendly fire his first night out.

"He's dead, Jim."

I couldn't believ this when I first heard it. I thougt it had to be a spoof or something. These smarmy, self righteous a$$holes in the CentCom press pool are disgusting. After his statement the press in the room applauded, unfriggin believable!!

That's basically what Brit said in his commentary. Said that they chose to be in this press pool, could have chosen another and should have if they'd wanted minute to minute updates. Geeze, there's a war on...Tommy Franks has better things to do right this minute than feed liberal reporters some pablum.

My wife keeps it on FOX all day...I'll ask her.

I am extremely impressed with B.G. Brooks. He is obviously an intelligent, disciplined, and highly accomplished individual. (and he's very nice on the eyes too)

wah wah wah wah.
That is just what Colonel Hunt said just a moment ago about the whining, second guessing, disloyal, former Generals and Admirals dashing about from camera to camera.

really like General Brooks. I loved his comment that, if they didn't think it was worth their time to attend the briefings, it was their call to leave (paraphrase).I think he simply said; "that's up to you"

Embed him with Marines on the point of the spear, say up near that beautiful, large lake or below it along the river plain with all the shading palms. Wolff will get the story of his life, if he files it quickly enough.

Wolff was too chicken to get himself embedded and Brooks handled himself well.

The good General should have offered to air drop Wolff into Basra or Baghdad.

I mean...isn't Brigadier General pretty high up the food chain?
To: Libloather
General Worthless. If somebody was named General Worthless, it would be prudent to stay out of his way. He would have left a clearly marked trail of bloody noses in the wake of his military career by the time he became a general.

The audacity of that slimy little man who works for the New Yorker Magazine! Somehow thinks HE deserves BETTER than a Brigadier General. The pomposity of his statement/question was breathtaking. The General is a better man than I, because I would have made that little pr..k crap in his pants with my answer.
