Killer Flu Bug: New Chinese "Biological Weapon" Rumors are Again Hot News on the Internet

A NewsPundit Exclusive Report:

There have been several rather grave news reports in the past two days about this new killer flu that originated in China. These disturbing news reports are again spreading rumors on the Internet about possible Chinese bio-weapons.

The new rumors are based partly on the rapid worldwide spread of this killer virus and the difficulty in treating the disease. Other factors: are the rapid calls for emergency quarantine of infected persons and the announcement that international airports will be forced to screen passengers. By all reports, the killer flu is spreading more rapidly than first expected. Last week there were about 100 known victims. Today there are over 1,500 worldwide. The death toll this morning was 54.

The rapid spread of this disease lends increasing weight to the evidence that this mystery flu may have been developed in a laboratory. More worrisome, perhaps, is the discovery that the disease first appeared when a Chinese medical professor stayed in a Hong Kong hotel. Casual contact with other guests apparently ignited a worldwide heath crisis. Unfortunately, heath officials cannot question the research scientist because he died from the killer flu.

More Disturbing New Information:

News reports indicate the World Health Organization is concerned about the linkage between two newly identified viruses: One disease is a virus previously known to infect "only horses" – and this new disease has apparently leaped from species to species. That is a very disturbing sign and another known marker for identifying a possible bio-weapon.

I quote a brief excerpt from the WHO report:

Research attention is increasingly focusing on the Coronavirus family, though viruses from the Paramyxovirus and other families are also being considered as scientists cast the widest possible net in their search for the cause of SARS. Many are of the opinion that a diagnostic test could rapidly follow conclusive identification of the pathogen. Experts in the network are also considering the theory that SARS is caused by co-infection with two new viruses that somehow need each other in order to cause severe disease in humans. Evidence is strongly pointing to a new virus, or possibly two new viruses, that have not previously been known to infect humans or cause severe disease.

Hypotheses include a virus known to cause disease in an animal host that has jumped the species barrier to infect humans, or a known human virus that has mutated to acquire properties that are causing much more severe disease in humans. It is increasingly certain, however, that SARS is a serious new disease caused by a newly recognized pathogen.

The second disturbing sign is that it appears that when the two viruses are linked in a host, the patient quickly develops "severe acute respiratory syndrome" (SARS). The mystery flu is transmutted rapidly into a killer pneumonia and the infected patient needs emergency hospitalization. Otherwise, the odds of survival becomes problematically remote.

The third disturbing sign is the increasing rate of infection doctors and hospital staff. Many hospitals are rumored to be closing their doors to patients diagnosed with SARS. A doctor with the Prince of Wales Hospital told reporters yesterday that this mystery disease was "[T]he worst medical disaster I have ever seen." Infecting medical treatment personnel is one of the primary and preferred targets of a bio-weapon.

I spoke with an expert in internal medicine yesterday about whether this new killer disease might possibly be a "man-made disease," or in other words, a possible bio-weapon. After considering the evidence set forth above, he said that, "All the signs are there and it is very disturbing." The doctor declined further comment and preferred not to be quoted on the record.

Reluctantly, this independent reporter is forced to conclude that the world may be facing the onslaught of a terrible new killer disease. It is possible the disease may be man made. Even more disturbing is the outbreak of this disease and its timing to coincide with the War on Iraq.

Even more disturbing is the outbreak of this disease and its timing to coincide with the War on Iraq.

I think it actually predated the war with Iraq by several months.

Yes, but everyone knew that the war was coming.

The way the Chinese have clamped down on public information is also distrubing.

The Chinese are disturbing. Let's hope the dropped the vial and it spreads through their government like poison ivy.

Nature has a way of thinning an overpopulation of herd animals.

China qualifies whether the bug is manmade or a mutation of something already existing!

Actually, the Chinese are not famous for their open society, or allowing bad news to be told about them, particularly within China.

Not to say it isn't bio-engineered, but my info tells me that these two viruses are not uncommon. They are found in most people. The upsetting part is one report that said they were found in necropsied lung tissue. They are more commonly seen in nasal and saliva secretions, even in healthy people.

I have no doubt this is a man-made virus. We should stop Chinese from entering the country, until this blows over. If it never blows over, oh, well.

They are stealing our technology, they are arming our enemies, they are flooding our country ( http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=30903 ) are they also waging war against us? When China strikes, they will strike many ways, and they will strike asymmetrically.

"Disturbing"

We need a more incisive word, but I'm afraid to make a suggestion.

I'll stick with 'disturbing'; this is a very disturbing outbreak.

Given the difficulty of controlling a viral epedemic, it seems unlikely that SARS is caused directly by a bio-weapon. But it is possible that a Chineese scientist was doing research into bio-weapons or treatments for bio-weapons when he accidently developed a killer virus. Let's hope we can find a treatment and a cure for this quickly. Legionaire's Disease was also a nasty killer disease that baffled scientists for a while. This looks like a tougher disease, but there still may be a way to cure it.

As for the Chineese, I believe they are an extremely dangerous nation. I've personally observed low-level spying by Chineese nationals and I have no doubt that they are working on numerous ways to attack America. But this doesn't look like one of them.

There is one major issue with bio-warfare, as it pertains to the United States, that most people fail to recognize.

Because of the American diet and the superior medical care available in the United States, any infectious agent that is introduced into the world is always going to kill a lot more people from China, Pakistan, India, Zimbabwe, etc. than Americans. Or it will kill them faster.

Which makes germ warfare less effective against the U.S. than against any other nation in the world.

Especially the Chicom aspect, although you would need to toss in a few invertebrate life forms such as lobbyists and journalists to complete the Dem menagarie...

The rapid spread of this disease lends increasing weight to the evidence that this mystery flu may have been developed in a laboratory

The two things (rapid spread-evidence that it may be a bioweapon) are completely unrelated. The fact of rapid spread is a common feature of many natural respiratory pathogens and says nothing at all about the origin of this pathogen.

Didn't have genetic engineering when the Influenza outbreak of 1918 hit, and that was worse than this bug. China is a prime breeding ground for crossover strains of nasty flu bugs because people sleep in close proximity with their livestock (and no, no comments about Woody Allen movies)...

Well, I am board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Society for Microbiology, and I think the evidence that this is a bioweapon is zero.

And, feel free to quote me.

On the record.
