Protest
Conversations with Trentino ^ | March 27, 2003 | Trentino

There are protesters everywhere, marching with signs and banners, shouting slogans, disrupting traffic, taunting the police, breaking things, and otherwise annoying the rest of us. There is a protest scheduled as I write this aimed "to shut this city down."

Is there anything more pathetic than a Lefty scorned?

It's not as though the rest of us haven't heard their arguments against the war in Iraq and against the Bush administration and against America. We've heard them. How could we miss hearing them? We aren't persuaded.

We, the rest of us, that is, don't believe that their chaining themselves together, covering themselves in fake (or even, real) blood or vomit, lying down in Rockefeller Center streets to block traffic can persuade us to their point of view. We aren't persuaded that the a banner saying, "We support our troops when they kill their officers" has much to do with peace or with persuasion. Are the protesters dopey enough to believe they're reaching the hearts and minds of the undecided with those antics?

What we're seeing, time and again, are huge displays of petulance, infantile anger, screaming, foot-stamping hissy fits.

.....

I don't mean to make light of these protests. They are farcical but sinister. Now, in the midst of war they are most certainly prolonging it, making it bloodier than it needs to be. Willy-nilly, the Iraqi regime will choose to believe that America is sufficiently divided so that if they only hang in there, they will defeat us, Vietnam redux. But even nincompoops know that Iraq is not Vietnam, that we have committed sufficient lethal force to win, and our victory will come quickly.

It's clear from the banners and speeches of the leading characters in this grim charade that their aim is not peace. It is America's defeat.

They make a pretense of exercising their constitutional rights, but they display their contempt for the Constitution and for constitutional government. They announce that they owe no allegiance to this terrorist state and its Hitlerian leaders. Congressional validation and representative government mean nothing to them. They assert that this nation was tainted at birth and they know it cannot be repaired. Their predecessors of former days were waiting for socialist revolution. They offered it to us. We rejected it. Their successors, the protesters, will never get over that rejection. What galls them most is that we were right and they have been wrong all along.

Its going to take a hell of a lot more than a bunch of anti-american communist vomit spewing peaceniks to shut this city down.

"We support our troops when they kill their officers"

I had never seen that protest sign. Takes a sick mind to think up this stuff.
