Bloom just gave GREAT report!
The 3rd ID's spirits are SOARING (his word) today because they believe the Iraqis made a major mistake. That column moving down from Baghdad was made up of civie trucks and cars and "filled with troops wearing U.S.-like uniforms". The lead elements got within a mile of the 3rd and then the air support swooped in. Took out the lead element and then dropped 52 bombs on the rest of the "12-mile long" column! Wooooo hoooo! All mopped up.
He said they've changed their rules of engagement based on that report AND that they've found caches in nearby towns of uniforms similar to the 3rd ID. Now they're told that friendlies are wearing their chemsuit pants. If an approaching figure does not have on those pants and doesn't submit immediately, rules now allow them to fire.
It was good to hear such an upbeat report from the 3rd. Weather was beautiful.

David Bloom has done some of the finest battlefield reporting in this war that I've seen. He's put you right there, made you feel what he and the troops he's with are experiencing and he's done it in an easily accessible way.

Re: Highway to Hell
About a month ago, I stumbled upon a thread that described the original highway to hell (they had a different name for it, but essentially the same thing) from the first Gulf War. Someone had included a great description by P.J. O'Rourke and awesome pictures of the hundreds of vehicles destroyed while fleeing from Kuwait. I've searched and searched for it but to no avail. It was terrific reading.
