Various | 3/27/2003 | Me

Posted on 03/26/2003 9:04:14 PM PST by Centurion2000

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:

Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle.

Your post is outstanding.

But you forgot that he can use the SAME toothbrush for BOTH jobs...

I think SnA has failed. 4,000 Iraqis - ca. 1%. The resistance is much heavier than in 1991, although the Iraqi military is described as less effective. The reporters also say that they don´t think of the Iraqi people as "shocked". We HOPED that SnA would have been successful, but it was NOT. Now, the WH and Pentagon prepare the public for a long war (some months). That´s ok - for me. For the media, it´s something they can write and comment about!

P.S.: I´m not talking about the media in Europe. It´s said that the US press also attacks the strategy.

Post P.S.: Military experts say, that it´s not a change in strategy but in tactics. A little difference.

SkyGuy picked up on the threat in Koffee's statement yesterday warning "the belligerents" will answer for civilian casualties.

John Negroponte just faxed his response to Kofi:

1200: British tanks destroyed 14 Iraqi T-55 tanks in the Basra area on Thursday, a UK Ministry of Defence official says.

Iraq MoD: That column isn't dead, it's resting!

UK MoD: Look, matey, I know a dead convoy when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now!

Iraq MoD: No, no, it's not dead, it's resting! Remarkable tank, the T-55, isn't it, eh? Beautiful camouflage!

UK MoD: The camouflage didn't enter into it. It's stone dead.

Iraq MoD: No, no, no, no! 'E's resting!

UK MoD: All right then, if they's restin', I'll wake 'em up!
(shouting at the burned out convoy)
'Ello, Mister Iraqi Tankers! I've got a lovely fresh Humanitarian Daily Ration for you if you show...

They have been talking for 36-48 hours now about one of our tanks ans two Bradleys being taken out. They keep reporting it like it is something new, but it is the same old story.

I think the media is viewing the war much like we are, through soda straws.

Well, SnA failed, because the Iraqi people weren´t impressed that way we all wished they would be.

The "gray-ness" of the area (having EPWs suggest surrender to their comrades), I agree with. It would be something, if I were running the show, that I would make certain that I coordinated with the Red Cross. However, although they are indeed the mediating body of the GCs, they probably would not want to be stuck in the middle of doing so, and we'd probably end up having to rely on their "retired generals" for the most educated opinion. It would end up being very controversial, I suspect.

I do see a need to revisit certain aspects of the GCs in light of present circumstances in the world. There are some holes to fill and questions just begging to be mediated in order to legitimize such things as this TV antenna, Gitmo, etc.

Criticism is a way of life for the left leaning media. They have no proposals or recommendations, only snide, anti-Bush comments and questions. I'm doing my best trying to ignore them

There's no pleasing the media; they are like children.

In Gulf War I they complained about lack of access.

This time, they're complaining we "rushed" to war. Now they're complaining it's too slow and we're "bogged" down.

Now they have embedded journalists and said today at CENTCOM briefing "what is the value of staying here for briefings".

Perhaps the realize they've become as irrelevant as the UN.

Briefly, Turkey wants control of Kurdistan.

The Kurds want control of Kurdistan, which includes a bunch of Northern Iraq--more of NI than the Kurds currently occupy.

If the Kurds think they have control over additional territory, the Turks will be interested in the same territory.

But we want to keep Turkey OUTTA there.

So we don't want Kurds taking territory which the Turks will try to take later on.

Not clear to me, either.
