***Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - Day 8 - LIVE THREAD***
Various | 3/27/2003 | Me

Posted on 03/26/2003 9:04:14 PM PST by Centurion2000

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:

Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Sounds like the press does not do it's homework on the stories they are working on.

Yes you are right for the most - at Qatar. And you know it is sad because besides doing media work for my job, I also help out a number of young adults who were sexually assaulted by molesters within the Jehovah's Witnesses organization (Watchtower). Sadly, like the Catholics, a number of these cases were covered up by the organization for "image" reasons and the survivors were kicked out and shunned by the familes and friends.

So why tell you that?

I have worked with Laurie Goodstien at the NY Times to get a story on the abuse out on August 11, 2002. I work with Julie Scelfo at Newswe"a"k to get her story out in the June 24, 2002 edition. I have worked with CBC's Linda Guerriero and got a full one hour documentary out back on January 29, 2003. I have been involved working with the AP and James McCarten at Canadian Press in getting stories out on this subject. My point is that in all cases, these "liberal" press people properly investigated and reported the stories on the abuse.

And that is so sad because I know, first hand, these reporters actually do their homework. But in this case, a lot of the stories out of Qatar are all over the place.

Good for you! I called our local affiliates yesterday and they said they'd received many complaints and would log mine but suggested I follow it up with a letter (not e-mail). Have started letter and need to finish today.

No one I called suggested calling the FCC but it's not a bad idea. Haven't thought to call Lindsey Graham but I'll give it a shot today.

Would it be legit to use these EPW's to contact their former unit and tell them they're being treated well...AND that they haven't a snowball's chance of prevailing?

The quick answer is that GC forbids coercion, but I suspect there are acceptable methods to do that. I don't know the full answer, but I bet ONA- does...

Weigh in on this, ONA!!! --- PING

All you have proven is that they will investigate in detail when something fits their agenda. You are investigating a scandal in a religious organization: hence they are quite willing to help you get your story out.

Should you have had the same information about the DNC, they wouldn't give you the time of day.

That's my poiny Miss Marple. I know they can properly investigate when they "want" to. But in Qatar, they are not.

Caught up! Anyone see Bill Kristol (sp) on FN last night nailing WP for running today's front page "opinion piece" as "news"? "Un-named sources" (and sources denying quotes attributed to them) w/in the Pentagon claiming the war will last for months...contradicting the higher-ups - including Pete Pace, who BK talked to at the Pentagon. Bill K. was outraged at the WP deceit.

Brenda Buttner saying stocks are down on rumors of a longer-lasting war. Thanks, WP. Getting talking points from Hillary or Daschle?

Major Bob (analyst) just did a great explanation of how tanks go into a town and are attacked in housing areas by Iraqi soldeirs that live in these areas so in retaleation civilian homes get blasted.

I missed Major Bob... :-(

This area is a little grey, but I would say no. Even if the POW concerned wanted to, I'm pretty sure we couldn't (hence why we haven't had interviews with Iraqi POW's either in this or the first Gulf war).

However, letters from the POW's to their families isn't forbidden under the GC. It's just a matter of getting them to the families (something Saddam won't be keen on at all).

I heard that they fixed these tanks and that they were back in the battle. Does anyone know if this is true?

I'm not going to look for the reference, but one of the US military spokesmen stated that the tanks were repairable. However, as far as being back in action, that was not stated... the repairs might take a bit of time if it were more than swapping out an engine or repairing a track.
