***Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - Day 8 - LIVE THREAD***
Various | 3/27/2003 | Me

Posted on 03/26/2003 9:04:14 PM PST by Centurion2000

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:

Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

I'm rather proud of the fact that I have NEVER seen little Georgie on This Week as an anchor.

We're in the same club! The only time I've ever seen George was on 9/11. I was at the office and ABC was the only channel our rabbit-eared tv would pick up. I'll never forget what I heard him utter on live television, totally unrehearsed at a fevered pace:

"There are facilities in the White House, not the normal situation room, which everyone has seen in the past, has seen pictures of. There is a second situation room, behind the primary situation room, which has video conferencing capabilities. The director of the Pentagon, the defense chief, can speak from a national military command center at the Pentagon. The Secretary of State can speak from the State Department, the President from wherever he is, and they'll have this capability for video conferencing throughout this crisis."

"In my time at the White House it was used in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, in the aftermath of the TWA Flight 800 bombing, and that would be the way they would stay in contact through the afternoon."

We've heard our command has established communications with enemy units encouraging them not to fight.

Would it be legit to use these EPW's to contact their former unit and tell them they're being treated well...AND that they haven't a snowball's chance of prevailing?

(Me before seeing the Reuters tripe) Considering that it's probably Reuters who wrote the article, it'll be something along the lines of "Those terrible American imperialistic brutes bombed a busload of women and children."

Damn if I wasn't close. They gave a brief mention that it was a busload of Republican Guard (what they say "appeared" to be Republican Guard).

Found it:

Article 13

Prisoners of war must at all times be humanely treated. Any unlawful act or omission by the Detaining Power causing death or seriously endangering the health of a prisoner of war in its custody is prohibited, and will be regarded as a serious breach of the present Convention. In particular, no prisoner of war may be subjected to physical mutilation or to medical or scientific experiments of any kind which are not justified by the medical, dental or hospital treatment of the prisoner concerned and carried out in his interest.

Likewise, prisoners of war must at all times be protected, particularly against acts of violence or intimidation and against insults and public curiosity.

Measures of reprisal against prisoners of war are prohibited.

I wish it would fly, but that would be all-too-easily construed as being "degrading and humiliating".

Well, sure, we could let our POWs contact their former units and tell them they're being treated well, but I suspect that the fedayeen or any other of Saddam's evil minions would just execute their families.

Run, Saddam, run!
Fox and Friends gave a final cut of the anti-American protestros, "They may be anti-war, but they're definitely pro-litter."
Fox News - The US did not have an air mission in the area of the market, but the Iraqis had a missile battery there.

Re: Tapping the keg.

Well, we may have to drink to the troops after the sun appropriately goes over the hedge today, anyway. Among our circle of friends, we are watching for the accomplishment of a particular operation & then the toasts will begin in earnest.

350 civvies? They haven't gotten the latest updates from the Fedhayeen yet, then.

Ah should of had noted "corpes of Iraqi soldiers" or something...the title is mis leading making one think "bus" and "corpes" would be civilians.

Re 1271

I am sure these reporters are getting heat from the home bases that they aren't earning their keep.. Not defending them. The are boneheads to be sure!

And of course they see their articles as empty and shallow (in other words not sensational enough for PP)

Thank god for brooks & others who have to put up with their crap & babysit

I've about had it with these CENTCOM briefings. Today's Q from NY reporter was idiotic...

Yes, I completely agree.

I know CENTCOM will "spin". There job is to "sell" the war. Make no mistake. Why? I know because I have to do government communications in my line of work too and I know how you always put a positive spin on stories.

And this is where the press' job comes in. That job is to hold these generals accountable. And they must ask good solid questions. One question I have yet to hear is .... what is the percentage of targets hit by the bombs and can you provide the back up evidence for the question? Is that question ever asked? Nope. Instead you get some stupid liberal CBC Canadian reporter (note I'm Canadian too) asking a stupid question about when is the USA going to show video of the bombs not hitting their targets? That reporter knows the drill and he should know the proper question to ask.

So what I am saying is CENTCOM briefers are doing their job but the lamestream press is not doing theirs. Thus, some of the most stupidest questions on the planet are being asked. And then the press will tell the public that they are "not" being provided the information.

As an example and just two days ago and yesterday, I watched Chinese reporters ask questions about how a farmers shot down AH 64s and how the Veep's daughter was acting as a human shield. Thus, I just couldn't bare watching this today.

One other thing I can tell you about the press and no doubt others on this board who are experts will have their say too. When an "event" occurs the press wants to find out all of the details and decribe the event to the public. They usually will take boths sides and usually just report the news. But once a story lasts more than a few days (such as a war) and the story has "major legs", then the press will start to look for and make their own stories. If anyone in government says even the most wildest thing on or off the record on an event and the press needs a new angle to keep the story alive, then, at this point in the event, the press will start reporting the stories out of context.

This, war is no exception to that rule as you may have noticed in the Washington Post story.

And who loses? We, the public do.

Did you see what John Podhoretz had to say about one of our favorite pressitudes in the NY Post this morning?

"Ms. vanden Heuvel also complained that Helen Thomas, the ancient White House pseudo-reporter, had been relegated to a "kind of Siberia" because she dared to point out the "irony" of Donald Rumsfeld complaining about Iraqi violations of the Geneva Convention.

Given Helen Thomas' high jinks of late, which have included asking Ari Fleischer why the president "wants to bomb innocent Iraqi children" and comparing Bush to Hitler and Israel to Nazi Germany, I said Helen Thomas shouldn't be sent to Siberia but rather to an old-age home."
