Hundreds of Puerto Rican Troops Await Activation

As the war between the United States and Iraq intensifies, 770 troops from the [Puerto Rico] National Guard await mobilization at any moment, while an additional 500 await activation.

Adjutant-General Francisco Márquez reported yesterday that the U. S. Armed Forces have expressed their interest in activating two Guard units comprising 500 soldiers.

Márquez declined to identify the units for security reasons until they are activated.

On the other hand, he indicated that 770 soldiers are awaiting to be mobilized at any time to the Middle East. They remain stationed at Camp Santiago in Salinas and at [U. S. Naval Station] Roosevelt Roads [in Ceiba].

"[We are] waiting for the (Persian Gulf) theater to notify [us] that transportation troops are really needed there," Márquez said.

He [further] stated that, at the moment, he has not been informed if any National Guard soldier has fallen in combat.

[R]egarding the deplorable conditions that Puerto Rican soldiers have faced in different U. S. bases, Márquez replied that certain situations arise in the bases when a certain amount of troops arrives. He admitted that it may happen that the authorities in these facilities are not ready to receive the soldiers.

"You have to remember that these soldiers who are in the bases are there temporarily and are in the process of being assigned to much more comfortable facilities, but you have to see how the live in the desert...."

Guess again. Last Sunday, March 23, 2003 saw 10,000 anti-war/anti-American protesters assemble in Caguas, PR opposed by only 12 counter-demonstrators.

Are you implying that the residents of Puerto Rico are more patriotic than those stateside?

Guess again. How many of the residents of other states danced in the street at the news that the U.S. Navy was being forced off U.S. Taxpayer owned land, the way the residents of Puerto Rico did, as our Nation was preparing to go to war?

The anti-war movement in Puerto Rico is no different from that in the rest of the United States. It is basically fueled by left-wing, anti-American operatives and front groups.

It is safe to say that over 90% of the Puerto Rican electorate wants to continue a close relationship with the United States, either by maintaining the present Commonwealth (territorial) status or seeking admission of the island as the 51st state of the Union. Even the most "nationalistic" within the pro-Commonwealth faction would be loath to renounce U. S. citizenship.
