[history]
"Senate Democrats think they've found the ideal candidate to test just how badly the racially tinged Trent Lott affair hurt Republicans," Paul Bedard writes in the Washington Whispers column of U.S. News & World Report. "It's Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker, a law-and-order African-American who is considering a run for the seat opened by the retirement of Sen. Zell Miller," Mr. Bedard said. " 'We're high on him,' says a top Senate aide. The popular Baker just met with Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle and others who offered to help in any bid."

I will not say what I feel about this, but, suffice it to say, that plays to the majority in Atlanta.

La Petit D'Asshole (D-France), once again playing petty
politics while his nation is at war.

That actually wouldn't be a bad choice for the 'Rats. From what I understand, he isn't a raging leftist. However, the 'Rats will prove their racist stripes again and will be way too skittish to nominate an African-American for a Senate seat they believe they can win with a White guy. Even if Baker gets the nod, and barring a disaster on the GOP side, I think we'll pick this seat up (but I hope it won't be with Johnny Isakson).

So the Dems REALLY think that, in the wake of everything that's happened, people even REMEMBER Trent Lott any more?

If he runs, he can't run for reelection for Attorney General and I believe Governor Perdue (R) will appoint a Republican replacement.
However, this helps Johnny Isakson (R) as conservative whites in Georgia will probably not vote for a black politician. And since they will be going to the polls to reelect Bush, they will probably hold their nose and pull the lever for Isakson. Of course, Isakson has the moderate vote locked up.

I couldn't agree more. Baker loses with the Conservative White Democrats in South Georgia. The numbers aren't much there for any democrat statewide in Georgia nowadays (with the exception of Zell, and he barely won despite being a popular governor). It really is becoming a Republican state. It is just a matter of getting these incumbents, like Baker, out of office. Run Therbert run.

I think the people that Lott p*ssed off will never forget....

Silly asses! Don't they realize there's a war on?

I sure would like to see someone a bit more independent of the neo con status quo, like Charlie Norwood maybe???, run against Isakson in Republican primary.

Congressman Norwood (R) has indicated he has no intention of running for the Senate. As of now, Isakson is the only declared Republican running for the seat . . . and Rove wants it that way.

Those of you who are posting that White Conservatives in Georgia wouldn't vote for a black politician have just proved the Democrats point. I am a Georgian. I would vote for a black politician if he/she were Republican. I would not only vote for but actively campaign for a black politician cut from the same cloth as say JC Watts or Condi Rice.

Ahhhhhhh don't you love it. Democrats offering up another token to show their policy of "heppin black folk" has been a real success for the last 50 years.
It would be amazing accept for the fact that Democrat "tokenism" seems to continue to work with the black community in large part. The DemocRATs have really kept the blacks at home on the "plantation", continually offering them more manna at the teat of government, rarely coming through, and every now and then giving them a "token" gesture.
And they claim conservatives are racists? It is a bizzarro world indeed, especially when it comes to black political thought.

Yes, that Norwood.

Is this the Norwood of the "Norwood/Dingle" fame? Not sure. Elaborate for me. It wouldn't surprise me if he got into it with a lib like Dingle, but come to think of it, I do remember something about he and Dingle sponsoring some sort of pro gun rights bill. This is about right for Charlie. He is big on 2nd amendment rights and much more concerned about securing the borders/immigration issues than the Republican establishment is.

Baker is one of the two black candidates (I'd dare say that Sanford Bishop is the other) that can play just as well to the downstate rural audience as easily as the Atlanta urban/suburban audience.A huge point - and one that's not lost on the Barnes/Jackson machine (as in "The Roy & Maynard Show") is that if Baker steps out of the AG's office to run for Zell's Senate seat, Sonny Perdue gets to appoint a replacement, and they know that the appointee will be a Republican as opposed to someone beholden to them.
In any event, either Baker or Bishop would make for a good race against someone on our side like Jack Kingston. At this stage, I'd put my money on him; he's got the wherewithal to get the job done, he's a true Republican, and he appeals to both traditional members of the GOP as well as the neo-conservative movement. Isakson is too wishy-washy and soft-spoken for many, and Norwood...well, he's Norwood. Unless someone can show me better (and yes, I'm open for discussion), I'm riding with Kingston.

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
