Just monitored on Sky News: embedded reporter says Shiites in Basra have begun, in his words, a "popular uprising" against the Saddam forces still in the city. British Army units are "pouring" artillery into the city (likely isolated areas) preparing to move in.

You are right on target.
Saddam's men were mixed in with the civilians waiting for urban warfare.
Alot easier for the Shi'ites to determine who the bad guys are than for us.
This is how our Spec Ops and freed Iraqis will take care of the trash in Baghdad. They will know who the Soddomite Killer Thugs are. They have no Geneva Convention to worry about as they will seek revenge for over decades of the Soddomite thugs!

There wouldn't be any CIA or special forces of any kind involved in this, now would there? ;-)

I don't understand this, but am very intrigued.
Are the Shi'ites muslims? If so, why are they here and not in Iran?
To: TonyInOhio
First we surround the city with troops, then we let the inhabitants in the city know that we are there and now would be a great time to attack the Republican Guard without them being able to flee. Excellent tactics.

I'm confused - what exactly are the British doing and to whom are they doing it?
To: Dimensio
In any case, any assistance against Saddam is helpful at this moment, and time will tell how the Shi'ites act toward us after this is over. But according to many people here on FR, all Muslims are completely evil and need to be shot dead immeidately where they stand. I don't get it.

I believe the Sunni are the orgin of Bathe Party and Saddam. Kurds and Shiites have been the oppressed ones.

I like to see them flee to the Brits. Hopefully the Brits will have their MG set at knee level and open fire. When we hose them all in the open field, stop and listen. If we hear moaning, spray for another 30 seconds.

If it were possible, I'd GLADLY exchange every one of those marchers in the major cities for the population of Basra. Even as committed Muslims, I think 90% of them would be far more "American" and patriotic than the cockroaches who protest while our men and women are in harm's way.

We cannot let them down this time, like we did in 1991.
Save them.
To: Grampa Dave
Sounds like the timing of this is very astute.
Ask Congress for $80 Billion, and point to a free Basra to rush the cash.

Briefing officer says Iraqis may be reinforcing from the north of the city, but believe most fighters are fedayeen and remnants of the 51st Division
Rear-area security has been tightened up significantly
