"From what I know about the Geneva Convention, people who engage in combat while out of uniform are considered "guerillas" and are subject to execution. It is a clear violation."

Not quite true. Guerrillas may also be considered legal "combatants" under the Geneva Convention, and held as prisoners of war. This is what we experienced in Vietnam. In addition to resorting to a ruse in order to attack our troops, Saddam is exploiting an information warfare/propaganda theme straight out of the Ho Chi Minh playbook: the bare-foot peasant defending his native soil against the technologically superior enemy. Moreover, if Saddam can get Coalition troops to start firing on surrendering Iraqis (out of concern for possible ambushes), he can discourage surrender by his own troops. Our (coalition) troops must be mindful of both the rear area threat, and the Geneva Convention.

They were also carrying large amounts of money and one had an Iraqi military ID.

This is the third time I've seen reference to "farmers" carrying wads of cash. Hopefully at this point our guys consider this tantamount to being armed.

"It was a lucky night for a lot of our people out there,"

Nope - - I don't believe in luck - - it was Providence. May our fighting men and women gain wisdom from this. I'm sure they are very young and, despite their excellent training, may be a little too trusting of those waving white flags.

They were dressed as Bedouin peasants, but they did not have farm workers' hands. They were clean-shaven and well-groomed.

Good catch, guys. You can't fake farm-worker hands.

The Kubota front-end loader with stinger missiles is no slouch.

"After the battle, eight Iraqis believed to be plotting the path of the Americans were stopped and taken prisoner after they mistakenly drove right into a Marine position.

They were dressed as Bedouin peasants, but they did not have farm workers' hands. They were clean-shaven and well-groomed. They were also carrying large amounts of money and one had an Iraqi military ID."

If they had weapons, they are illegal combatants, and should be treated as such. If not, send them back to the POW pens for possible further processing to Gitmo.

"....but they did not have farm workers' hands",

Just like the VC...except these guys are still alive..for now. They'll probably will take out a few LARs, but they will pay a terrible price.

If you capture combatants dressed in civilian duds to conceal their real status, can't you just hang them as spys. Of course my knowledge of the laws of war may be a bit out of date.

Perhaps they ought to start sending something besides "Farmers" to do their fighting? Hahahahahahaha

The Marines, all travelling in Canadian-built light armoured reconnaissance vehicles, fought back with their 25-mm chain guns.

That's one hell of a $h!tstorm in anybody's book.

I think the Marines don't find out about the "wads of cash" until after the hostilities!

One article a day or so ago quoted a marine complaining about searching 'barefoot farmers' with pockets full of cash. He was having to let them pass even though his suspicions told him otherwise.
