Rumsfeld does have a tendency for tunnel vision.

Let's hope the general has missed this one.

IMHO, the foot soldier will definitely be the "smart weapon" to finally win this war though - just like he did in WWII.

As always, for everyone who reads this thread, despite what you hear in the media, casualties does NOT equal deaths. It includes wounded

3,000 casualties would likely be somewhere in the range of 600-800 killed. Not many cities with a population of 6 million have ever been taken from a hostile force with attacking casualties that low. None, in fact.

Isn't this one Clinton's faggot "Generals"? I thought the rest of them went back to their former jobs as Arkansas State Troopers.

"I think he thought these were U.S. generals with their feet planted in World War II that didn't understand the new way of warfare," he added.

Does McCaffrey forget that technology has greatly changed since he was in Iraq, let alone during WWII? Wasn't he Clinton's drug czar? What great accomplishments did he perform while in serving Clinton's administration?

I thought we were winning. Do we still own Afganistan??? Oh, that's right, we do. Can we handle a bunch of Iraqi-Yokels with bombs, missiles, 350000 ground troops? Of course we can.

They always say the same sh!t, "I'm an ex-general and I wasn't asked for my assesment from the president, boo-hoo."

basically the same as the World trade center. Only this time the our folks have a fighting chance, are well armed, and well trained. Saddam must surely realize he is not attacking secretaries and salesmen this time.I know we will lose good men in this fight. The question to ask is how many will we lose if we don't fight? Good luck and God speed to our men...........

Another thing; maybe we are drawing out the Republican Gaurd by laying low and feigning uncertainty (not that we are, but the media always seems to be on the misunderestimated side).

So, the Rep. Gaurd gets boastfull and stick their heads out just an inch or two further, we enchourage this behavior and fan the flames of confidence; then smack!!!! We nail them in the open desert with a MOAB.

Hell, it worked on Gore and Daschle...why not Saddham??

Yes, he was clinton's Drug Czar.

And the function of the office of the Drug Czar under clinton was to let the big drug cartel shipments through and just nail the little guys who neglected to pay clinton his percentage. In other words, eliminate the freelance competition. I don't know if McCaffrey knew that, or maybe he was just a bit thick.

"I think he thought these were U.S. generals with their feet planted in World War II that didn't understand the new way of warfare," he added.

I've been worried about this 'overconfidence' thing as well. But to say that the most powerfull military in the world, facing guys who change uniforms, fake surrender, and use farmers to shoot down helicopters has somehow failed to 'grow' out of a world war II mentality is pure Barbara Streisand

yes, I hope they cut the bastards off before they re-enter Bagdad and then we have a big problem.

yes I know we have equipment and a plan in case of WMD.

Please, in your mind: picture rummy and madame all(notso)bright. See the difference? Feel better?

Iwo Jima: 6,318 U.S. Marines dead among the 25,581 casualties for a single island.

Okinawa: 12,000 Army, Navy, and Marines dead among 36,000 casualties in yet another battle in a larger war.

We've had casualties before. We'll have more before Baghdad is freed. It won't stop us.

If I am not mistaken Rumsfeld wanted to use 50 or 60,000 troops for this war and we now have something upwards of 250,000 in theater for this action. Gen. Franks's option was clearly the one chosen here not Rumsfeld's.

The Democrats need to get their stories straight. Either, like Bill Clinton, this is going to be a war with no US casualties (so when there are some, it's a failure), or the US is going to get slaughtered, like McCaffery is implying.

McCaffrey doesn't want Bush to win.

He wants his best buddy Bill back in office.

I agree with the assessment on Rummy...America, esp. Prez Bush put way too much faith into him...Rummy is playing a very dangerous game here...he put only just enough force in the theater and yet we still have to get the 62,000 troops from the 4th mech in place (which should be in place over Turkey)...there were noises of not having enough boots on the ground before the war starts...and yet, the politicians are playing with the unrealistic timetable...Rummy is a micromanager, smart, but abrasive and love to direct all the minor details in a plan...and worst yet, he has no experience in leading men in battles...

look at the rummy hyperbole...

1) decapitation - 2) lack of command and control 3) losing control 4) shock and awe 5) massive surrenderings and 6) happy iraqis to greet us...

how many of that came true? the next hyperbole is the precision bombs will do the job, light and mobile units is what we need, we own the night....

I sure hope rummy is not drunk with his own koolaid as I have friends and family serving in the theater now...I want them to come home safe and sound...

seriously, if this war goes badly, I really wanna hear what all those neocons who never served in military will say..the likes of Kistol, Wolfowitz and Perle...

maybe I am getting cold feet here, but the hubris, overconfidence from Rummy is what scares me the most...

Isn't this the General in charge of the War on drugs, like his opinion means something.

I do think it's in the neighborhood of 1-2 thousand deaths that are POSSIBLE depending on strategy used. Less if they are patient and take 3 or 4 months to slowly locate clusters of defenses and take them out with precision fire power.

More if they just drive straight ahead to get it over quickly.

I like the slower strategy.

Nothing against the good general, but I'd prefer an opinion on this matter from GEN Fred Franks who commanded the Jayhawkers in Desert Storm. I believe Franks was a better thinker on the battlefield and can offer an candid assessment without the "baggage" that McCaffery (sp?) brings to the table.
