LA SLIMES' NOTABLE OSCAR QUOTABLES -- NICOLE KIDMAN ON ONE SIDE... AND FR'S "RONDOG" ON THE OTHER!
LEFT ANGELES SLIMES

Posted on 03/24/2003 1:59:50 PM PST by AnnaZ

So I finally start going through, page by page, the Oscar coverage in today's Slimes (that's right... still reading  it so that you don't have to). And then I almost had a heart attack.

The "E"/"Calendar Part 1" Section is dedicated to Oscar coverage, E1 starting it all off with a big pic of Best Actor winner Adrien Brody smooching presenter Halle Berry and the beginning of the story.

Following it in to E2 and E3, there are a bunch of huge picture of various winners from the night, the top of each page prefaced with a huge bold quote.

On the left side (heh, heh) is one quote:

"Why do you come to the Academy Awards when the world is in such turmoil?
Because art is important."

Nicole Kidman, accepting the best actress award

On the right side (in more ways than one ;^) is another quote:

"If John Wayne was here, he'd be doing what we're doing.
He'd be supporting the troops."

Ron Smith, demonstrator at Hollywood and Highland

CONGRATULATIONS, RONDOG!!! You ROCK!!!

Great job! We had 2 rally pictures in the Atlanta paper today, including the "Least Supporting Actor: Martin Sheen". Were those FReepers in that picture?

Since I could not find my quote in the ONLINE version of the L.A. Times, here is the link to a scan of the OFFLINE version, courtesy of hole_n_one!

That reminds me - I need to re-download that John Wayne speech on patriotism. Yep, the one where he's drunk.

Wasn't there some legal action threatened or actually undertaken recently over the copyright on the John Cage piece? I recall reading something somewhere; maybe it was a review of his biography recalling an incident of the kind!

Okay, a guy who thought he had a plea deal then learned that the judge was telling everyone at his country club that he was going disregard the plea arrangement and give Polanski 20 years.

Oh, sure. A lot of great movies have been made. But not an awful lot of them recently. What are the big winners this year? Bowling for Columbine? Chicago? The Pianist? I have no desire to see any of them.

I am a LOTR fan, although I was disappointed in the treatment of Faramir and Theoden. Gimli too, for that matter.

I've just been watching the first of Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai trilogy this evening. Now there's a great movie. Most of the stuff coming out of Holiwood these days is pretty worthless.

Yes, art can be where you find it. I like having my brain stimulated by various forms of "art", but the word has been
depreciated over the last forty years.

Just because she falls in to the category of "artiste" doesn't mean she has to be given a license to come off as arrogant.

Knew a painter a while back. His streak of arrogance was of the flavor of refusing commissions (for whatever reason,
and his wife complaining about "how nasty" the rebuffed wannabe patron was in return. Go figure.)

Yet this guy was mad when I repeated a WSJ article about Asian picture factories churning out "art".
One would do the sky, pass it down to the foreground painter, ...

My advice: read the book (The Pianist), and then decide if you want to see the film. It is the closest cinematic adaptation of any book that I have ever seen, and as was noted above, an anti-Schindler.

See also the MUCH less impressive ONLINE version of my quote, which I finally found:
HERE:
*

'Why do you come to the Academy Awards when the world is in such turmoil?
Because art is important.'

Nicole Kidman, accepting the best actress award

*

'If John Wayne was here, he'd be doing what we're doing.
He'd be supporting the troops.'

Ron Smith, demonstrator at Hollywood and Highland

Art IS important.

Not all art is important. Here's hoping that museum crammed full of Saddam's mug was blasted away on day one.

Enlighten me, please. Did Hollyweird have a flag or any kind of American symbol dressing the set of the Oscars last night? Was there any mention about the troops save that lame throwaway sentence at the end? Last I looked there were NO screaming headlines about how the Academy Rewards were a cosmic patriotic spectacle never before witnessed by the mind of Man.

And what of the standing ovation for Roman Polanski, a known child molester, who found sanctuary in FRANCE?!? Is that the kind of message the Hollyweird culture sends and I’m supposed to writhe in orgiastic glee?

As far as the Leftists who gave the votes to Moore the Pig, what‘s your point? Assuming you’re in the business, how about you firing a few missives to your guild, instead, if you can’t stand the backlash from the Heartland?

People like me don’t eagerly feed at the trough of Deviance and wanton violence and gratuitous nudity, you name it. Hollywood might bring you a paycheck, but it brings nothing to me but feelings of disgust. And there’s nothing in last night’s Display of the Self-Absorbed to change my thoughts any time soon.

Never forget that I’M the customer. I’M the one who goes to the theater or video store or clicks the buttons for pay-for-view, transferring my hard earned cash to Jackboot Valenti and the various craft union heads and Rodeo Drive shopkeepers.

Or not.

Enlighten me, please. Did Hollyweird have a flag or any kind of American symbol dressing the set of the Oscars last night?

No. There was a curtain, just like always. If they had had giant flag backdrop, and every last presenter said something about the troops, would you have been happy, or would you have called it cynical? Nicole Kidman said that the Oscars are a tradition, and that it's important to uphold traditions. Do you agree or disagree?

Was there any mention about the troops save that lame throwaway sentence at the end?

Adrien Brody mentioned his friend serving in Iraq. Michael Moore was roundly booed when he started spewing. Chris Cooper said only that he wishes us all peace (I'll bet the troops do, too).Beyond that, it was pretty apolitical all around.

Last I looked there were NO screaming headlines about how the Academy Rewards were a cosmic patriotic spectacle never before witnessed by the mind of Man.

No, they were just the freakin' Academy Awards. They're an award show for the entertainment industry. They aren't a political event. They aren't there to serve anyone's agenda. You're the one who keeps insisting that it has to be something that you want it to be. I find it interesting, though, that there were both pro- and anti-war protestors on the street last night, everyone wanting the Oscars to serve their purpose.

And what of the standing ovation for Roman Polanski, a known child molester, who found sanctuary in FRANCE?!? Is that the kind of message the Hollyweird culture sends and I’m supposed to writhe in orgiastic glee?

Learn a little more about that case and we'll talk. Actually watch The Pianist, a very, very good film, and easily the best-directed film of the year. Again, Hollywood isn't sending any message except that this was the best directing job of the year. YOU'RE the one who thinks it's some insidious message Hollywood is trying to beam into your skull.

As far as the Leftists who gave the votes to Moore the Pig, what‘s your point? Assuming you’re in the business, how about you firing a few missives to your guild, instead, if you can’t stand the backlash from the Heartland?

I'm not in a guild job myself, nor am I one of the 5000-odd Academy members. Nor am I one of the couple of hundred who vote in the Documentary category. I was shocked, not only that a bad documentary won, but that there was a Holocaust doc that didn't win.

Well, good for you. Obviously you're not the target market Hollywood is appealing to. When there are enough people like you that Hollywood thinks they can make money off you, rest assured that they will provide something suitable for your palate. Because trust me, Hollywood is not about advancing a political agenda. It's about making money.

Never forget that I’M the customer. I’M the one who goes to the theater or video store or clicks the buttons for pay-for-view, transferring my hard earned cash to Jackboot Valenti and the various craft union heads and Rodeo Drive shopkeepers.

Or not.

Hey, no one holds a gun to your head and makes you pay. You don't like the movie, don't go. You don't like the Academy Awards, don't watch. But don't get your panties in a twist when they don't reflect your particular worldview. I was at an ice cream store yesterday, and there wasn't one patriotic message. My grocery store didn't make an announcement supporting the troops. Not everything has to.
