Marines Watch Fox News
Conservative Truth ^ | March 24, 2003 | Tom Barrett

Colonel Oliver North, following an interview with General Franks, Commander of the war in Iraq, made this statement: “General Franks says the Marines only watch Fox News. That’s because Fox tells the truth, and portrays these brave men and women as they are –heroes defending the world.” If only we could say the same about the other major news media. More...

As a former US Marine, I have always resented being called a “Jarhead,” with the implication that Marines are not as smart as the other branches of the military.

Don't be so sensitive. Everyone with an ounce of knowledge knows that the Marines have the highest intellectual and physical standars of all the services. IIRC, their minimum ASVAB score requirement is three times as high as the Army, twice as high as the Navy, and 50% higher than the Air Force.

So the Marines are only getting to see the top half of the war too?

I don't know what your post means, but the Marines are fighting the war. I guess they are seeing some of it.

I always assumed that "Jarhead" was a reference to the appearance of a Marine Corps haircut. From my youth in San Diego I remember how distinctly different Marines in their civvies looked compared with Navy guys.

It means that FOX is just as bad as the others. They put so many graphics on their screen that you can't see the footage! I was watching last night and they showed the diminishing Baghdad skyline. All you could see was the AA fire while the bombs were blowing up in the city behind the "Breaking News" banner. Why even show any footage? Just fill the screen all the way to the top with multiple marquee scrolls. Alternate the directions. The carnival's in town!

Plus Col North is still held in high regard in the Corps. We don't forget our heroes.

There are two schools of thought in the Corps on North: those who love him and those who hate him. Quite a few Marines who served with him don't care for him.

There were three very young protestors (young teens-skateboards in hands) and the ever-present indy media photographer following them around.

I saw them as I was leaving. The li'l punks started a snowball fight with their buddies across Broadway! I wonder if they got a picture of their non-violence.

With luck, in the future, they'll eat their own.

What I meant to say was did anyone catch that interview with Geraldo having his camera point to the ond of a huge Marine crowd holding a giant sign that said, "We Love Laurie Dhue!"?? I thought that was great!

Barrett is right about the intelligence of Marines, and not just in what TV they choose to watch. I served in the USMC from 1989 to 1993, and from my viewpoint, the average Marine was far brighter, on subjects ranging from survival in combat to abstract history, than almost any of the deadheads you find on college campuses. OK, a large minority of college students are bright in their own field, but few have the all-around knowledge of the Marines whom they deride as stupid hicks. Semper Fi!
