>>President Bush's declaration of war against Iraq will decide the future of Japan.

Declaration of war? I must have missed that one somewhere.

If the US and Japan withdrew their money the UN would be greatly reduced.

Sounds good to me!

An article that recognizes that the UN is a dead end street warms my heart. Aren't you pleased?

Maybe you were doing something else last Thursday nite around 9pm EST. So that's probably why you didn't hear that we bombed Baghdad, which is an act of war no matter how you slice it.

Don't misunderstand. I strongly support this war.

Definitely pleased here....But I'd be happier if the US dumped the UN first!

I watched the speech and I appluaded it. I just meant that while we are in a war, there was no declaration of war by congress. I was just noting that...Not saying that I would want and official declaration either.

“Bush Will Force Japan to Withdraw From UN”

When I saw the headline I though this going to be another hit piece on the US but after reading it I was pleasantly surprised to find that Mr. Mr. Ochiai is one smart man.

Oh, they all do it. Presidents are like that, yeah they are.

Not a formal declaration by congress, but it's a war nonetheless.

This is a good article. 40% of the UN's dues about to vanish is a promising thought. The article seems to be right on about Japan's need to strengthen ties with the USA. And the USA needs to strengthen ties with Asia. The future for America is Asia. Europe is old, and regressing.

I never thought I'd live to see the day when the dissolution of the UN would be openly discussed by anyone besides the JBS , and much-mocked 'tinfoilers' like me. And to think that it's being suggested that GWB and his administration also want to kill off the UN!

If anyone wants to know just how much the world has changed, do a google search , or search articles here on FR, with 'millennium summit' as the query. Look at the loathsome charter WJC and most of the rest of the 'world leaders' signed. This was September of 2000.

Good.. maybe the world will learn that WJC's signature dosen't mean Jack to the USA.
( probably less then jack as we will immediately reject it )

Bush will not force Japan to do anything. Japan is a very good ally of the United States, and Japan will take its own decisions.

I wish! Those doofuses are still whining that the USA didn't ratify Kyoto like we "had to" because of algore's signature, ditto the ICC treaty, which WJC signed. If they did just a teensy bit of research, they'd realize that it's Congress that votes on and ratifies treaties (like the ICC and Kyoto protocols) ; they don't become legally binding on the USA based on a president's signature-his signature means about as much as mine or yours would. The senate voted 66-0 not to even consider VOTING on Kyoto in it's present form. But they're still whining about GWB's removal of the ( legally meaningless) presidential signature from the ICC document of intent , and the renunciation of Kyoto, as a stab in the back. They really believe that if algore had won, the US would have ratified both treaties-and they also believe that any democrat who enters the WH will ratify those two treaties (all by him/herself). And that explains why there's so much hatred of GWB in the media and on the part of some heads of state....They're trying to "torpedo" his presidency, so he'll be defeated in 2004 and a democrat will take over. They really believe that if a democrat takes the WH, the US will automatically pass Kyoto and the ICC!

Ochiai is an intelligent man. The headline is either a misread or a mistranslation. What is should read is that following Iraq, the U.S. may encourage Japan, one of our leading albeit nonmilitary supporters, to join with the western allaince in forming an alternative to the United Nations, an internaional organization of free countries who share our values. Without the dues and international contributions of the AUN, the UN would sink further into irrelavance.
