'CHEMICAL PLANT FOUND'
A huge chemical weapons factory has been found in Iraq, according to Pentagon sources.
The facility was found by advancing US troops in An Najaf, around 100 miles south of Baghdad, the sources say.
The general in charge of the factory was arrested by the 1st Brigade of the Third Infantry division and is being questioned, the sources said.
An unconfirmed report by Fox news said the complex is around 100-acres, adjacent to military barracks and surrounded by an electric fence.
Sky News Foreign Affairs Editor Tim Marshall said if the claims are substantiated they will in part vindicate President Bush and Prime Minister Blair.
They have argued the case for war against Iraq on the grounds that Saddam Hussein had banned weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and biological weapons.
The Iraqi regime has always denied this and UN weapons inspectors sent back into the country at the end of last year failed to find any evidence to suggest otherwise.

I'm sure Peter Arnett will be there tomorrow explaining it all away as a "Baby Milk Factory".

Can't be weapons. Blix and Cherac (sp?) assure us that Iraq has no such! It all depends on what the meaning of the word "weapons" is.

MSNBC is tripping all over themselves, emphasizing that this is a "CHEMICAL" facility, and not necessarily a "CHEMICAL WEAPONS" facility. Chris Wallace pointedly said that "We don't have confirmation that weapons were produced here."
Hey, Chris! Why is a friggin' GENERAL in charge of the place? And why is it ON A MILITARY facility?

This article says An Najaf is "around 100 miles south of Baghdad."
But THIS ARTICLE says "...the Iraqi city of An Najaf, which is situated some 225 miles south of Baghdad."
So which is it?
I hate the "fog of war."

The materials purchase records, names of suppliers and packaging slips will be contained in the accounting records within the facility.

100 acres-- we want to know who worked there, where they are now, what they produced there, what foreign firms supplied the banned machinery in use there, and who provided the chemical precursors they used.

Maybe you could also page Tommie Daschle, Ted Kennedy and Scottie Ritter.I tried, but Teddy was already sleeping off today's drunk, and Scotty was in a hurry to get down to the local Burger King. As for Tiny Tommy,
"I'm deeply saddened and troubled by this."

Every Iraqi who tortured Americans taken as POWs should be required to test these chemicals in an enclosed room with Blix and Chiraq present to ensure that such chemicals are harmless. Throw in Peter Jennings, Gunga Dan and a few other journalists just to provide independent verification. We will believe the results of such testing.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. This plant LOOKS suspicious, but it hasn't been proved yet that it was making chem weapons.

Hey, Chris! Why is a friggin' GENERAL in charge of the place? And why is it ON A MILITARY facility?Chrissy needs to listen to Fox - they're giving out all kinds of info on this place, mentioning things like the barracks, the berm and the electric fence surrounding it, as well as the efforts made to camoflage it from the air.
I had no idea that industrial espionage was such a problem - must be some really special baby milk being made there. </sarcasm>
