I have seen these guys on TV and am always amazed at the amount of equipment they are carrying on their backs. I don't even know how they can stand up.

It is crazy. They are way overloaded, and it is a very serious problem. They ought to be carrying about half the weight they are. Many field items drastically need modernization. In many cases, men use civilian items far superior to force general issue stuff, but they have to pay for it themselves (e.g. camelback vs. canteen, wicking clothing vs. numerous cotton items, etc).
