Women in the Military

I've got a serious question that I need some Freeper help with. I know that in World War II women were able to serve separately from men in the Armed Forces in such services as the WACS and the WAVES. Are there any such women's only corps in our services today? This is an honest question. I have wanted badly to serve my country, but I have almost always felt that women's roles in the military should not be a soldiers but as equally important nurses, intelligence officers, and other support staff. ANY FEMALE SOLDIERS OR VETS READING THIS PLEASE DON'T BE OFFENDED. I'm genuinely interested in knowing this stuff, so if any Freeper can help I'd be most appreciative.

I am female and a vet (USA ret.). There are a lot of jobs in the military available to females. But not one of them that doesn't require you fulfill the basic requirements. I was primarily an interrogator/interpreter/translator (MI). Utilizing those skills I was in PSYOPS (lot of good PSYOPS used in the past months!). I was also a SERE instructor. I don't think Mike Durant cared that he was instructed by some females when it came to using what he learned from us. Bottom line, if you wanna be a service member, there are certain things you need to do, one of them is learning basic soldiering. My suggestion, go see a recruiter and find what is available in the fields you are interesting in serving. Good luck. No shame in being a "female" soldier. JMVHO

My experience has been that women officers are stickier than men on all the military courtesies.

So Lyndi had better snap those salutes and really sing out the ma'ams.

I realize that does happen, but generalizations make me rather angry.

I believe that I was well-qualified for the work I did in the military, with a 99th percentile AFQT score. ;)

I don't remember being around women officers much. The Navy Reserve officers were usually a lax bunch with the enlisted, but a ring knocker would bust ya.

My personal observations during the first Gulf War lead me to believe most women aren't cut to fight. One evening during Desert Shield we received an alarm that stated that a group of heavily armed men had penetrated the perimeter and we were to take cover. I was standing in line at the chow tent with my sidearm when this occured. As I ran back to my barricaded tent I picked up several (3 or 4) women along the way. I entered the tent (I was a weapons courier and had to guard 100's of weapons prior to our armory opening) and told my men to arm up and prepare to defend our weapons and personnel. My men locked and loaded and we set up a perimeter around the tent. All this time the women were in the tent crying and hiding, they were totally worthless to me.

Your IQ is extremely high, you're a FReeper after all. Does that mean you've got what it takes to be a fighter pilot? What these guys have to endure is incredible.

No, and I really wouldn't want to be a fighter pilot.

I went up in an F-16 once (a great privilege and honor) and blew my cookies.

Look at the positive side...What chance would the Republican Guard have against a female fighter pilot or tank commander with PMS???

Shoot, my wife would drive a tank right into downtown Bagdhad under the right circumstances...

One of my daughters will be going into the Navy in July...One of my sons was part of a tank crew in the army...Although I can picture my son in combat, I will personally put the hurt on anyone who harms my daughter, whether it be at home, in Iraq or any given space station...

Aside from that, women have faster reflexes and the lack of physical strength is overcome by technology these days...(I don't know if tanks have power steering) I know women drive bull dozers and operate cranes...

I only question one thing and that is whether the average female can acquire the "kill the enemy and survive" characteristic that is necessary for face to face combat...

That's not true. I always outranked my wife by one and sometimes two pay grades and she never acknowledged or obeyed a single direct order I ever gave her at home. ;-)

I have two nieces in the military. One is an Arabic linguist and the other is in basic training. They are the troops. I am a retired mustang. I was a troop. Some of the female troops were good and some were not. Same with the mles.
