BATON ROUGE - The South Louisiana serial killer may not be a white male, as suspected for more than a year, and could even be a black man, authorities said Friday.
An FBI profile released Dec. 30 directed investigators to look for a white male between 25 and 35 years of age. But as found in the Washington, D.C., sniper case, the profile was based on generalities of people who commit such crimes, not on evidence.

Godawa said she's unaware whether the DNA evidence yielded a racial determination....and she's the task force spokesperson....unbelievable

Are his victims of one race or several? Serial killers don't kill outside of their own race as a general rule.
There are always the exceptions though.

Mohammed in Washington DC was truly an equal opportunity killer. His "choices" represented the "diversity" of America.
Where is Chief Moose on this issue?

I think there have been both white and black victims.

As a general rule I said, and added that there were always the exceptions.

Mostly true, with Jeff Dahmer as an exception....He killed whites, Blacks and Asians...
But the one big, general rule they always start with is that serial killers are white males, relatively smart, in their 30s, with a history of sex abuse by an adult, bed wetting, play with fire (I guess I might be part serial killer), have mutilated animals or mistreated them and big collections of porn. FWIW

I think there have been both white and black victims. That would explain why they are changing their theory, which they admit was more based on playing the odds then anything else.
Most police departments do this because the chances are that the most likely theory is the right one. But playing the odds can be dangerous because it can blind you to other paths that are not as likely but still should be checked.

Mass murderer as opposed to serial killer?
To: jpl
In John Douglas's characterization, Mohammed / Malvo fit the more classical definition of spree killers, rather than serial killers.

That profile contains such traits as watching women while pursuing legitimate activities like shopping or buying gasoline, not handling rejection well, having problems with women, blaming others for his problems, hating to lose a sense of control, being arrogant and having an excessive need for excitement and thrill. OMG! It's Bill Clinton!

I live in the Bay Area of California and in my community whites are about 40% and "Asians" about 60% but the largest group is Afghans.
When I look at the kids on dates at the local movie I see almost all young people date out of their own racial group. So it seems that given the vicitms to pick from is "diverse" in today's world people are not limited to their own race.(When I was young 30 years ago there was no inter-racial dating.)
If we compare the serail killers like Bundy of 20 years ago to today we certainly will be misled.
Things change and people change so lets not get stuck in the past.

You mean to tell me that they have been PROFILING white males just because 99.9% of serial killers are white males?? Unacceptable. Where is the outrage? But wait....if we start looking for a Black, Hispanic, Asian or a swarthy male from the Middle East well....we can't have that because that is outright RACISM. Better go back to the WHITE MALE theory.....don't want to hurt any feelings....</sarcasm>

I wonder if this change in description came about because of Carrie's mail carrier. The mail carrier told LE that a man opened the door and accepted a pkg. at Carrie's house after she was missing. Very interesting.
They have 5 DNA linked victims now...all but the one woman from Lafayette were from Baton Rogue and 3 of those lived right around the LSU campus.
Kinnamore and Carrie Yoder were found in close proximinty off I-10 in Whiskey Bay.
Another unusual serial killer trait is that the women were not all killed in the same manner.
Different styles of murders and varying places where he left the bodies. Some left at the scene, some not.
Unfortunately the profilers aren't doing as well anymore with their "standard" serial killer profile. Sounds like it could end up like the sniper profiles....completely wrong.
Thanks for the article.

And there are women serial killers too. The general rules will undoubtedly be revised again and again as time goes on and we learn more.
Wayne Williams was not considered as a suspect for a time because they were playing the odds. They were wrong. With each new case the database you can draw from gets more detailed and they are getting better at reading it.
But the type of profiling that you see on TV and movies is, for the most part, fantasy.

I agree, I tend to think of the sniper's as spree killers.
