British Morning Papers - The Front Pages, 22 March 2003
Sky News ^ | March 22, 2003

Dramatic pictures have been coming out of Iraq since the bombing campaign began. The Sun carries perhaps the most dramatic yet - capturing the moment the "shock and awe" campaign began.

The anti-war Mirror puts it another way. It describes last night's attack, which was beamed across the world as it happened, as "America's night of shame".

The cruise missile blitz is captured in the two detailed pictures by the Daily Mail, which shows smoke pouring out of one large building.

The Daily Express opts to carry a picture of Iraqi troops surrendering in southern Iraq, although the paper's picture desk has ignored requests from the military to blur the captives' faces.

Not even war in Iraq can squeeze a bikini-clad beauty off the front page of the Daily Star. The paper repeats White House rumours that Saddam may have been killed in the first strike of the campaign.

Last night's blitz was aimed at pummelling commanders into abandoning Saddam Hussein and giving up the fight, according to the Guardian.

The Allies "rained thunder on Iraq", according to The Times, after "surrender talks with Republican Guard chiefs failed to spark any immediate defections".

The Independent carries a personal piece from its veteran Middle East correspondent Robert Fisk.

And finally the Financial Times carries another dramatic picture, this time of Americans on the run as US Marines take cover from Iraqi fire.

Barring a miracle, there will be no Sunday edition of the Morning papers, because Sky News never bothers putting them together on Sunday. And no, I don't know why the Telegraph is missing.

I would say that the Times headline writer by using the word "blitzing" and all the connotations that blitz has to the British people was the worst of the British headlines. Worse than the Daily Mirror to me.

Great post. Each paper displays its long-standing position on the war quite accurately.

Margaret Atwood above Iraq! Will the LA Times put Norman Mailer up top as oneupmanship?

Looking at views of Baghdad now, the lights are still on and some traffic is about, not the look of a city under a careless "blitz". This is a deliberate attempt to slant the news.

That's Holly Valence. An Australian ex-Neighbors actress (like Kylie Minogue) turned sexy musical goddess recently (again, like Kylie Minogue).

Charlie Dimmock! My hero!

*ahem* At any length, I found it amusing that one of the covers had Alan Titchmarsh on it. Aside from this week, when war coverage has been ongoing throughout the afternoon and evening hours on BBC America, I strive to watch "Ground Force" twice a day. It's my big fannish thing.

*lets out a quick squeal*

*ahems and goes off to sleep*
