Teresa Grady casts a shadow in the blood-stained window of the U.S. Army and Marine Corp recruiting station as she reads a statement along with a group of antiwar protesters Monday in Lansing. Two of the protesters splattered human blood on the walls of the station's entrance. Four people, including Grady, were arrested.
LANSING -- Protesters splattered human blood onto an American flag Monday at a military recruiting station in order to draw attention to the anti-war movement.
A group of about 20 gathered in front of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps recruiting station at the Cayuga Mall in Lansing on Monday protesting a possible war against Iraq. Four protesters who entered the office were arrested by Tompkins County Sheriff's deputies.
Another anti-war protest took place Monday on the corner of Clinton and Meadow streets late in the afternoon. Signs asking drivers to honk if they supported the anti-war movement drew a variety of responses.
"We are asking people to contact their representatives, to say that America doesn't want war," Susan Boutras said. "It's very critical this week."
While the city protest drew attention only from drivers, law enforcement responded to the protest at the military recruitment station.
Two of the women involved in the protest, Clare Grady and Teresa Grady, took their own blood and splashed it onto the windows, walls and sidewalk of the military recruitment station.
"They used real human blood because it's a symbol," said Maryann Florence Grady. "We would rather see this blood shed than from those innocent in Iraq."
The protesters stood outside praying and singing as employees at the recruitment station locked the doors to prevent further damage. Two protesters, Peter DeMott and Danny Burns, remained inside the office.
During the time of the protest, several men arrived at the center, some dressed in fatigues, carrying luggage. The protesters pleaded with them to not be part of the military. As employees at the recruitment center opened the doors, Clare Grady and Teresa Grady pushed their way into the building.
When the Sheriff's deputies arrived, the four protesters inside the building were handcuffed and taken away in patrol cars.
DeMott, Burns and Clare Grady have previously been arrested during a protest at the military recruitment center. On Dec. 21, they were part of 13 protesters arrested for criminal trespass

I wonder how much force is legally permissible in trying to prevent someone from vandalizing or desecrating the flag. Just curious - the silly college kids in my town may try something similar (when they return from spring break).

"They used real human blood because it's a symbol," said Maryann Florence Grady. "We would rather see this blood shed than from those innocent in Iraq." What a waste- that blood could have been used to save people with real lives.

Yep, when you are too dumb to think of something to say, and nobody pays you any attention, splash some bodily fluids on the flag.

If the Anti-American Left keeps it up, pretty soon the human blood that will be spilled will be theirs.

I wonder how many of the pro-abortion/antiwar types will miss the irony.

I'm glad I don't live in Ithaca. Because I don't know what the penalty is for implanting a flag in an unnatural location is on a protester.

Would this not be a Crime ?? Considering that there are very clear laws on the dumping of bio-matter, I'd say these Useful Idiots should get a sound thumping from the EPA, AMA, and a few other health organizations. Blood can contain a number of known biohazardous threats ranging from Hepatitis (A through C) to HIV.
Considering the political leanings of these Useful Idiots, I would wager the likelihood of these lethal biohazards being present in their blood is significantly elevated.
They should be hauled in for this wanton affront to the Public Health.
