Japanese tourist attempts suicide in Kashmir

NEW DELHI (dpa) - A Japanese student tried to commit suicide in the strife-torn northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, apparently because it didn't match with what he had seen in travel brochures, a news report said Sunday. Koichiro Takata, a 22-year-old student from Japan, said, "This is not the Kashmir I have known and read about. I was hurt," the Indian Express newspaper reported.

A student of opthalmology, Takata said he was depressed by the ominous presence of gun-toting security personnel and the absence of happy people.

As he walked for nine kilometres from Srinagar city airport, Takata said he "went crazy and was anxious" thinking about all the police guards around him.

He stabbed himself several times with a pair of scissors, the Indian Express reported.

"I was afraid and went crazy after seeing so many gun-toting men in the city. I thought my safety is in question and the gunmen will kill me instantaneously," Takata said.

The picturesque state remains under siege, with both India and Pakistan staking claim to the region.

Two of the three wars fought between India and Pakistan have been over predominantly Muslim Kashmir.

I'd say this guy ought to steer clear of any Democratic convention in the future.

Oh boy, what a pansy. I've known since 1984, when it was on the front page of the L.A. Slimes Newspaper, that it was extremely dangerous to travel to Jammu and Kashmir.(The Headline was taped on my bedroom wall, big Zepp Fan you see) No matter how much I'd like to travel there,it just isn't so important as to put my life in serious danger.I've had to live vicariously through other peoples pictures of the 'Remote Northern Areas', and there are some stunningly beautiful places, but war continues to prevail, which negates any possible visit there.

Hari Curry? Hurry Kari? Hugh Carey?

A sloppy version of bowel-ripping, often by the upset or disturbed, as contrasted with the formalized ritual of honorable seppuku death following self-cutting.

Obviously he was part of the problem. He didn't have to get so snippy.

Once the scissors have spoken, there's nothing more to say.

Friend of mine told me that SaltLakeCity has either a chain or single restaurant called Curry in a Hurry.

When i stayed in Dallas there was a combo India/Jap/Viet place called Hari Curry.

Eating the food did not require disembowelment for gastric relief.

In 1516, Muira Yoshimoto committed suicide by cutting off his own head, something that got him a gazillion style points . . .
And so we straight let out on bail
A convict from the county jail,
Whose head was next
On some pretext
Condemned to be mown off,
And made him Headsman, for we said,
“Who’s next to be decapited
Cannot cut off another’s head
Until he’s cut his own off.”
