MOSCOW, March 17 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) - An attack on Iraq has no legal basis under existing United Nations Security Council resolutions, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said Monday, March 17.
"Resolution 1441 does not give anyone the right to an automatic use of force," Russia's top diplomat said in an official statement before departing for New York.
"Russia believes that the Iraqi problem should be regulated by the Security Council, which carries the main responsibility for ensuring international security."
Ivanov was apparently commenting on the war trios - U.S., Britain, and Spain - argument that existing Security Council resolutions on Iraq - notably 1441 - give them legal basis to attack Iraq.
The British Government's most senior legal adviser claimed that military action against Iraq is authorized under existing UN Security Council resolutions.
Statements by U.S., British and Spanish officials have been trying to sell the same message during the last few days.
Apparently, raising such controversial legal hassles currently reflect the failure of the war camp to secure support within the UN Security Council. That failure demonstrated itself in the withdrawal of the draft resolution through which Washington, London and Madrid sought military authorization.

The Russians are pissed a lot of their militray hardware is about to be destroyed. Not so good for arms sales when your stuff gets shredded by US tech.

"No Legal Grounds For War On Iraq: Russian FM"
"No Legal Grounds" for the following either:
1. The occupation of Poland.
2. The occupation of Romania.
3. The occupation of Bulgaria.
4. The occupation of the Baltic states.
5. The invasion of Hungary.
6. The invasion of Czechoslovakia.
7. The invasion of Afghanistan.
8. The murder of over 30,000,000 people plus since 1922.
9. The arming of terrorist groups like the PLO.
And the list is endless. Perhaps the Russians should look at the long dark list in their history before opening their mouth. Since I'm boycotting their few products they export already, there's not much else I can do except speak out against them. Buy American. Buy Colt or Bushmaster, not AK.

The French were the #2 arms dealer to Iraq. They don't want to see their equipment blown to small bits either.

I'm lost. If a second resolution wasn't needed, why did we propose one? 1441 does not authorize an attack and where was 1441 violated? The inspectors were allowd to go anywhere they wanted in full compliance with 1441. Just asking.

Did flatuance just occur or do the Russians having something to say. Somebody please tell me what this all means in the world of relevance.

Maybe we should change the name from Iraq to Chechnya.

I think they're more pissed that their violation of sanctions is about to be stopped. As if these greedy fools care about law...

The French and the Russians will have the distinct pleasure of sharing cheese and vodka together while we do the right thing. Afterwards, we will ensure that allied companies help rebuild Iraq, while these jerks sit on the sidelines and act as if they were helping all along. Enjoy the borsch and the pate', you ungrateful bastards!!

"Russia got rid of Soviets. You fight fantoms."
My,my another naive one. Putin was the head of the KGB in the SOVIET system. Most of the current ministers were former KGB operatives. If you trust the Russian bear you're the fool. Their recent opposition to us in Iraq is just the tip of the iceburg. But you go right on believing in the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus. Hell, go on believing FDR wasn't a socialist and that Bill Clinton was a great Presdient while you're at it. I'll continue to watch the Evil Empire with my eyes wide open. Communism didn't die. It's just been repackaged in the West and East by the media and some slick PR goons.
