WASHINGTON - Former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-N.Y., is in critical condition at a Washington area hospital, suffering from an infection after his appendix burst, his assistant said Monday.
Moynihan, who turned 76 on Sunday, is in the intensive care unit of the Washington Hospital Center, said Vicki Bear Dodson. His appendix ruptured last Monday.
"He was doing well until late Thursday, early Friday, when an infection set in," said Dodson. "Unfortunately, there's been no change in his condition over the weekend."
Moynihan has suffered a series of health setbacks in recent months. He was hospitalized in January for an intestinal disorder and again soon after for a back injury.
Now a senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Moynihan was first elected to the Senate in 1976 and finished his fourth term in 2000. Fellow legislators named Manhattan's new federal courthouse in his honor.

oh my. pat moynahan has been a true statesman, even though it sometimes required him to walk a very narrow path to maintain some dignity in the face of democrat party pressures.

Did the Social Security Commission he co-chaired ever finish their work?
To: dep

Did the Social Security Commission he co-chaired ever finish their work? I think their conclusion was: Raise Taxes.
Just another 'Rat with a drinking problem.

Sen. Moynihan and Nunn could be the last of the honorable democrats in the US Senate who had a real voice in their party. Today, Sen. Breaux and Miller are ignored by their once-relevant political party.
Best wishes to Sen. Moynihan and his family.

Just another 'Rat with a drinking problem. Knock it off. He was also the same Rat that in the 60's discussed the problems that would occur as a result of single-parent families, etc.

Same here. Wasn't he one of the first to highlight on a national level the destructive effects of single-parenting/broken families for poverty and minorities?

He's not dead yet.

Best wishes to the Democrats' #1 enemy of partial-birth infanticide.

I once admired Senator Moynihan.
I wonder why he prostituted himself to support Hillary's run though?

Prayers to Our Father for Sen. Moynihan, a true patriot and statesman.
To: Hank Rearden
Moynihan was a proponent of partial social security privatization.

Good man. I always had respect for him because he believed in what he was saying and it wasn't parroting what the RAT leadership wanted. St. Paddy's Day wouldn't be a bad day to go out on. Let's pray it is not.

One of the best ... for a Democrat.
His book, written back in the 70's, was an early warning about the UN and a treasure to read.
