Lyle Lovett speaks at SXSW Updated: 3/15/2003 8:50:00 PM By: News 8 Austin Staff SXSW attendees got a chance to hear Texas native Lyle Lovett's thoughts on musicians and activism.
He was one of the featured panelists at an interview conference Saturday.
Lovett was asked what he thought about artists taking a public stance on political issues, such as war. "Some people are able to express a valid point of view and bring up aspects of an issue that are worth listening to and need to be heard. But it's certainly not a necessary part of your mission statement as a musician to always assert your opinions and speak on them," Lovett said. Lovett said Natalie Maines, the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks is sweet and extremely talented.
He doesn't believe she meant to be political when she told a London crowd she was "ashamed President Bush was from Texas."
Lovett thinks it was an off-the-cuff remark and Maines has since apologized to the president. As for his personal opinion, Lovett said, "I absolutely trust President Bush's sincerity in that he's trying to do the right thing for us at the same time trusting he has a lot more information than we have. At the same time, I really hope we don't have to fire a shot in there."

I'm starting to figure out what went wrong between Lyle and Julia Roberts.
To: hispanarepublicana
Lyle has a BRAIN while Julia has only air between her ears.

I recall something John Sebastian said back in the 60s (I paraphrase) Hey we're musicians, what do we know about politics.

I dunno. Lyle sounded more like a cagey record label executive than a heart-on-my-sleeve artist. Which means he knows how not to step in it.

I always thought he was too good for her. After all, he has talent and brains...

Natalie Maines brought this on herself and if she thought she would not be critisized for her unwanted thoughts on President Bush, then she is just as dumb as Julia!
These people need to stop and think before opening their big mouths....at least they know how average citizens feel about them now!
